Goolwa Bakery est 1914 — Restaurant in Goolwa

For some reason this bakery kept popping up on my Facebook feeds. My husband and I live in Sydney and recently decided to have an adventure, we planned a day out and drove up to the Southern Highlands of NSW where we picked a heap of bakeries to try their meat pies and then rate them. What a disappointment! After living all over Australia, I’ve found it’s getting harder and harder to find a real bakery.

We’re on holiday in SA so I thought let’s go visit this bakery and try their pies.I’m am very pleased to say that finally, finally we found a fantastic bakery. What a shame it’s so far away from where we live.

We both had a chunky meat pie, we shared a Kitchener bun and a chocolate donut. Wow, just wow! If you live in SA get in your car and visit this...

Absolutely brilliant staffing and customer service. Waiting for a couple of pasties to finish heating on a Sunday, it was an utter delight listening to the two young serving women (late teens?) banter about what needed to be done, who'd do it, how, when, etc. Alone and unsupervised, they were nevertheless totally focused on their jobs and working as a team. WOW! Worth their weight in gold.

And I've personally complimented the older woman who often serves; a total professional who keeps it real and gets the job done with polish.

On top of which: super pasties, and those custard tarts and vanilla slices represent an existential threat to my waistline - perfect every time, the best I've had in years. We're so lucky to have this bakery team...

What a lucky find on a quiet Sunday afternoon in Goolwa. After a ride to Victor Harbour and back on the Cockle train, with some very excited children, we were in dire need of some coffee & a sugar fix, to combat the ringing in our ears from the excited children, who had obviously had a number of sugar fixes during the day. We decided to share a vanilla slice, as they were extremely generous in size. The vanilla slice was amazing & the coffees matched well to it. As it was just on closing, the owner added to our sugar fix, with a complementary donut. The range of cakes were fantastic, but the vanilla slice was standout.
