I find Japanese formal dining quite intimidating so don't often partake (even though it's delicious), but stopped here on a whim while looking for local Asian restaurants and was very impressed at the more casual experience I had here. The restaurant has a relaxed style with good ambiance, artwork and and noise isolation even though it fronts directly onto Main Road. We (2) were almost the only customers although it got busier into dinner time.
Menu is comprehensive and varied with a great selection of dishes for all tastes, requirements and is affordable with some premium items. Some of the dishes can be a little expensive but you get what you pay for. We found everything absolutely delicious, well prepared with a high level of presentation and care. Also fairly generous portions which was a surprise. We couldn't even look at the desert menu afterwards.
Similarly the bar is well stocked and they also offer an unexpected treat - Sake tasting (in Moonah of all places!) I haven't tried it before and can't say I would become a big sake drinker, but it was a lot of fun trying the different varieties with different food. Thematically it's very like Sydney Bavarian - a slice of the culture with regional food and drink. It was also not very expensive and I would recommend to share as a group experience.
At this point I should mention the impeccable and very high level of service provided, which was prompt, professional, comprehensive and charming. Our host was very helpful and always available to talk through the options, explain the background/language, advise on combinations/options or alternatives. I was not expecting such a high level of service in the northern suburbs, Yuzuka is making a great effort to push the flannelette curtain up to Derwent Park Road, and stake Moonah's reputation as the 'other' restaurant strip.
Dinner for two was $119 which is a little expensive for entre, mains and drinks (including sake tasting), but we didn't stint ourselves and the quality was well worth it overall. I can't wait for an excuse to return, honestly.
Update 2025-05-20 I've delayed an update as Yuzuka was going through a rough patch a few months ago, and I wanted to see any progress or decline before changing my review.. I can happily say that they are back and better than before.
The menu has been revisited and tightened up, with more seasonal offerings, and a change of house staff/policy has really levelled up the dining experience.
I would like to commend Kenneth who was a fantastic host last night - funny, charming, professional and always available to offer alternatives or advice with great timing, managing the table with flair and precision. He single-handedly made our family dinner feel special and welcome, without the obsequiousness fake vibe you sometimes get at à la carte restaurants. Well done Kenneth, I hope you get that raise you deserve it. :)
Oh, you should try the azuki fukuda taiyaki (red bean paste fish cake) - a special dessert,...
Read moreI arrived at this restaurant one Friday lunchtime with several workmates and was pleased to find out that they were able to accommodate us despite no prior booking. However, I can’t guarantee this will be your experience, the place did fill up fairly quickly after we arrived, so don’t say I didn’t warn you. I ordered Grilled Chicken Ramen and I’d like to say that this is because I try to judge a restaurant by ordering a defining dish that can be easily compared between different places serving the same cuisine, but the real reason is that I saw a picture in someone else’s review and thought it looked substantial and tasty, and I like the song ‘Ramen Rock’ by Shonen Knife, if you haven’t heard it you should have a listen and see if it affects your menu choice. The staff were friendly and efficient. The large colourful bird and honeycomb decorations were fun. The Ramen noodles fulfilled my expectations in quantity and quality. As the song says: ‘I wanna share my happy feeling/With people of the planet Earth/Ramen noodles charge the power’. Apparently a lot of Ramen restaurants went bust in Japan during the intense COVID times. Don’t let the same happen here, go out and eat as much as you can, I fully intend...

I can only write about our experience, but we had excellent friendly service, delicious AND quick food with plentiful portions (duck ramen and vegetarian ramen, tempura vegetables, and lotus root chips), served in a lovely simple atmosphere.
Does a very good job of straddling the divide between cafe style and fine dining. More like an accessible, affordable restaurant that nevertheless does quality food. (I don't know if it's authentic Japanese or not, but it was very tasty, so I don't really care.)
We could definitely sense the effort the owner has put into all the details, including the ambience, choosing good staff, and even little things like menu design (which had plenty of options – they do more than just ramen).
Better than the Hobart CBD Ajikoma in my opinion. Quite different, and much more focused on dining in.
Definitely worth repeat visits. We'll...
