I had the worst dining experience of my life at Alor Street Restaurant. I was dining with my two kids and my dad, and I ordered the ginger spring onion fish fillet with fried rice for my dad. When the elderly male staff member brought the fish (without rice) to our table, we noticed that the dish size was a bit larger than usual for a rice dish. We started eating, assuming the fried rice would be brought out later. However, no fried rice arrived. I spoke to the elderly staff member, but he didn't understand English and called over the female reception staff. She informed us that we had received the main dish, not the rice dish, and claimed we had already eaten a lot of it (we had barely touched it). She then insisted that we needed to pay an additional $8 for the difference. I told her we would be happy if they could just provide a serving of plain rice for my dad. Instead of resolving the issue, the female staff member took the entire dish away, accusing us of eating half of it, and refused to give us rice. She said our only options were to pay the difference or get a refund. I explained that I didn't want a refund, just the dish we had originally ordered. Why am I paying extra money for the mistake you made?? Despite this, she took the dish away and eventually brought out the original rice dish, but not with fried rice.
Also the old man swore to us in Cantonese that I understood. When I repeated what he said back to him, he became silent.
This experience was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. The staff's poor communication and lack of customer service ruined our meal. I would not recommend Alor Street...
Read morethis is a no frills Malaysian restaurant. All of the dishes were generally satisfying and tasted very much like what I have back in Malaysia.
I went straight for the sizzling tofu and minced pork, a dish that was bursting with nostalgia for me. This is a kid friendly dish - the tofu-egg-thickened umami gravy just goes so well with rice. I would say this version is quite close to Malaysian standard - they could do with more scrambled egg, but they got the gravy and tofu right.
We also ordered a spicy vegetable dish - it’s locally known as “four heavenly kings” in Malaysia. This is probably because the prawn chilli paste and four types of beans just takes like heaven! It’s not the healthiest vege dish on the menu, but probably the most enjoyable. The cereal pork ribs were a little dry and could do with a bit more curry leaves for that extra punch.
The meal didn’t burn a hole in our pocket ($60 for 3 dishes seems reasonable to me) - we left with steely determination to return and try other dishes that didn’t make the...
Read moreTomato fried egg seafood soup was pretty good 4/5- seafood was fresh, decent quality and quantity. Soup was thick and fried egg strands tasty. Would have been nice to have some greens. I would order it again.
(Friend's dish and opinion) Nasi lemak with fried chicken 3/5 - rice is fragrant, sambal not too spicy. Fried chicken "ordinary, tastes like kfc but not oily". Friend's verdict is would order Nasi lemak again but try other meats.
Teh - We managed to order teh C! Fragrant and thick tea taste, not too sweet. Came in a black tin cup which was cute but I'm biased and think that a glass cup keeps the tea warm for longer. Would definitely order again.
Service - 5 star. We were offered option of tea being less sweet and lady serving even checked if it was alright. Friendly service.
Seafood laksa next table looked enticing, the duck egg char kueh tiao sounds tasty... Maybe next time.
Update (2/4) : ordered their combination seafood horfan. Super delicious, gravy very tasty. Thanks for separating...
