As someone who’s grown up eating dim sum I highly rate this place. So, what do we recommend? The congee, for sure, was so homey, and the best bowl I’ve had in Melbourne. The dumpling skin was so thin but didn’t break and held together well. The HK xiao long bao was juicy and not as soupy as the Shanghai version. The Mai Lai Goh was not too sweet, fluffy and light. The durian flavour in the bun and puff was evident but not overpowering, the meatballs were huge, very filling and generous portions of chicken feet compared to other restaurants. The radish cake and fried items were all great and the recommendations Doris provided us were all worthy of praise.
This family owned restaurant sets itself apart, you can really taste the passion and quality in the food, loved the the order by quantity concept, the night time yumcha option, there’s less MSG so not as salty, service we received was amazing and would highly rate Chef Wong for some authentic dim sum in Melbourne.

Read moreWe had a very disappointing experience here at Chef Wong. Please don't believe the Instagram hype or these 5 star reviews (they ask you to leave a good review for a free cooler bag - beware!). We were not greeted well when we arrived, stood around for 5mins before being acknowledged. We ordered promptly however their menu is very confusing. Some items are shown on the menu, some different items are shown on the poster that are not on the menu and some are on the little piece of paper where you write the quantity of items you'd like to order. Very messy and not stream lined. We waited over 40mins for our food which is a joke. We had to ask about our food because no one reassured us it was coming. When it did eventually come there were alot of items that were sub par. We ordered xiao long baos, none had soup in them. The shark fin dumplings were old and crusty on the edges, it means it's not fresh!! Other items were overly soggy and oily. The place overall is a bit sad - not the yum cha experience you really want. The place looks more like a take away joint with the window of food being heated up by lamps... Would not come back and wouldn't recommend anyone to come here, it's a sorry excuse for yum cha :(
Edited to respond to owner: There is literally a sign (backboard with chalk) in their shop that says "Leave a positive review for a free cooler bag!" I am not making this up. Lots of excuses in the reply and not much accountability. I think that says enough about this place. How can you call a xiao long bao a xiao long bao if there is no soup when that is its signature feature of the dish but it's your fault because its "not to your taste". Ie: it's not authentic yum cha....

We were so damn impressed with this place, the dumplings are genuinely next level. Their xiao long bao is made a little different, where they seep the filling in soup overnight before wrapping and cooking them up, the flavour is sooo fragrant and juicy. I got to visit the kitchen out back and was in love with the fact that it was comprised of generations of family, passing down recipes, skills and wisdom in the dumpling making scene. It’s truly a “family run business”, and really reminded me of my childhood where I grew up at the back of my parent’s shop, super nostalgic and wholesome! Anyway, more about the FOOD! They have a huge range of dumplings and other yumcha items, which you can order by the singular number, which gives you the option to try a huge variety. Their dumpling skins are all handmade and their fillings were super juicy and flavourful. Loved the crunchy prawn toast as well and the football dumpling was chewy goodness. Their egg tarts also have 10 layers of pastry, so they’re super flaky too! This place got busy pretty quickly so it’s worth...
