With restrictions easing slightly, having just endured a couple of weeks Covid-19 lockdown I decided it was time to treat the kids to the new Betty’s Burgers & Concrete co. just opened at Southland. It’s fair to say I’m no slouch when it comes to knowing a good burger so the benchmark is set pretty high for me to rave about what’s served up. Upon arriving you have to say it’s a pretty impressive looking establishment. The neon, colours and theme sets your expectations high and I have to say, after feeding the 6 of us - it was a big thumbs up all ‘round! There was queue so I started to order on the easy to use App on my iPhone, but was told “if you order on the app you can’t eat-in”, which was a little odd I though, especially considering everyone is making their apps to go that way now, Fonda’s Mexican, TGI Fridays, it’s all the go, sit down, order, specify your table number and your food comes out to you. Presently their app does not accommodate that, so we had to order at the counter instead. The manager Daniel I think his name was, was super accomodating, he was buzzing around ensuring customers and the crowd were all okay, he had a really good manner about him, you could tell he really cared about this new venture and was invested in making sure customers had a good experience. The chicken Deluxe was the big favourite with the kids and I had the Noosa Classic Surf, that’s is a Betty’s Classic Burger laden with 4 (yes 4) lightly battered prawns. I’m a sucker for a Surf n Turf, so I had to try it. I was surprised, really surprised. It was delicious, and you could actually taste the prawns  - freshly cooked, they burst a little when you bit through the batter and the flavour went through every bite. The Chicken Deluxe was terrific as well, really fresh and crisp chicken, not as big and heavy as a traction ‘southern fried chicken’ you might get elsewhere, but again, combined with fresh crispy lettuce and a nice sauce it was fantastic.  We went with the standard fries and they were yummy and generous in portion size. I had the onion rings and there were great, real onion rings, not that Hungry Jack rubbish, light almost tempura batter and you tasted the juicy onion ring, so that was a winner. We all topped off the meal with either a thick shake or concrete (ice-cream) as they call it. Super delicious, a tad on the small side but that’s just me probably. I ordered the Chocolate and for my tastes, I won’t order it again. They have gone with a strong dark cocoa flavour  - to me a great chocolate thickshake is not ‘dark chocolate’ flavour, that’s a whole flavour that should stand alone. My mum who was with us till she was 88 yo used to love dark chocolate, so I equate dark chocolate flavour with those that also loved Marmalade, ginger and raisin toast cut into points! No, a good chocolate thickshake should be milk chocolate flavoured, not dark. That said, the kids ordered Chocolate Peanut butter flavoured thickshakes and the peanut butter diluted the strong cocoa flavour enough for them to all enjoy it, but I’d be definitely recommending they re-visit the flavour of their Chocolate and tone it back to something closer to Milo than Dark Old Gold Rum n raisin. It’s also fair to say you are not left stuffed full - that’s not to say the burgers are small or not satisfying, but you wouldn’t say they are large., which in a way sort of made me feel a little healthier by the end of it. I wasn’t hungry enough to stop at Hungry jacks on the way home for a Whopper, but if I was a tad hungry I’d probably customise my burger to go a double patty just to make sure. Definitely worth a visit and a welcome addition to Southland eating options that’s for sure!

I love love love the burgers here! It’s like a gourmet version of every fast food burger you crave, with ten times the quality and taste. My favourite thing is their app where you can order online. I wish all restaurants in the world had an app that you could use to order! It’s perfect for lockdown where you don’t have to talk too much, just make an order on the app and pick up. And you can even choose what time to pick it up so there’s no rush (works so well for me because I can order while at work, set a time, and then pick it up when my shift is done!) The staff were friendly when I went there twice before lockdown, and they were super busy so I don’t doubt that other people love the food here too. If you do go, you must try a burger! The other stuff is of course not too bad either but they’re called Betty’s Burgers for a reason and they’re the best things on the menu! Fish and chips and onion rings aren’t my favourite, but that’s ok because it was good to try them anyway I got a chocolate thick shake as well which was super yummy (reminds me of melted ice cream in a cup). Everything is pretty affordable if you compare their prices to other ‘gourmet’ burger joints. 5 stars!

The vibe at Betty’s Burger is amazing, with the aesthetic really rocking it’s name, with a nice touch of colours and kind of a rustic feel. Though I did have some concerns— their burgers (we had the Classic and Crispy Chicken burgers) weren’t that good. While it was cooked to perfection, and it had sauce on it, it just didn’t really taste like anything much, I’d say it needs more seasoning or more sauce. My friends also said the same about theirs. The staff are also long to get to, while I understand they’re cleaning tables, but we were waiting for 5 minutes before someone talked to us (keep in mind there were open tables that were clean before we got there). We also had to ask for water and bring a jug and cups ourselves, rather than them bringing it to us. I’m not sure if this is their company policy or they just forgot but yeah.

I came in with my family over lunch on Saturday 1st. We were excited to come enjoy some burgers and the food was great (though a bit pricey). Was just a bit disappointed by the service as the two young servers in the hut decided to have a lovely chat about their crazy night out (among other things). Wouldn’t be a problem except I was standing there for minutes waiting for service. When I was finally served after asking if this was where I ordered, the blonde one rolled her eyes before serving me. The server was incredibly rude and I was just shocked by the single word responses to my questions. She then threw the beeper on to the counter before walking away at the end. I ended up asking a different worker what I needed to do with it.

I don’t want this review to seem like an attack on the server but it really disappointed me when I had heard such positive things about this place. The food was really nice and the other workers were phenomenal. It’s just a shame that one weak link on their team completely soured my whole experience.

Edit: I came in today (Friday 28th July) just for myself and had a completely different experience. I spoke to the manager “Kevin” and he was empathetic to my experiences last time. The service was much better and I’m happy to update my review to reflect my...

It was my first time visitng Southland Shopping Centre where I was left with no other options to eat at, so I decided for the first time in my life to eat at a Betty's Burgers and was met with much surprise and amazing service. A young waiter Jacob was ridiculously charming and had very nice eyes, he greeted us pleasantly and offered us a variety of burgers, making me feel like I was in a michelin star restaurant, like I was at home. After making our order, only minutes after did it take for Jacob to return to our table, with our food freshly cooked and our fries wonderfully salted. The food was delicious and each bite of our burger carried a different flavour. After I had eaten my food I decided that the Betty's Burgers restaurant was a comforting environment to lay low and relax for a bit before continuing my shopping journey. As I sat and waited, watching my instagram reels, Jacob returned. This time taking my food and cleaning my table, something that I didnt want nor asked for, yet he did and did so wonderfully, leaving my table clean and spotless for the following customer. I loved my experience at Betty's Burgers Southland and highly recommend anyone looking for clothes to also look to quench their taste buds at Betty's...
