Ordered the so called meat lovers veal Parmigiana costing over $32, thinking it was going to be a reasonably sized good quality portion, especially given the waiter confirmed that “it’s quite a meal”, then confirms the order back and heads off to the kitchen.

Meal arrives and turns out it’s the wrong dish, which l raised with the cold unfriendly attitude female waitress (began from the moment we came through the door) who goes on to tell me that the waiter who took the order is new employee and that l need again repeat my l order back to her (whilst she may not be a new employee, her customer service is best described as frosty.

After waiting and watching my wife eat her dish, my meal comes back out a second time and turns out to be nothing more than a barely warm terrible value 1mm paper thin meat (apparently they call it veal that’s been butterflied) drowned in “cover up” everything slosh sauce, including the burnt tasteless fatty crust in abundant proportion.

My disgust must have been noticeable as yet another waiter comes over to enquire about my meal to which l respond that l am extremely disappointed. Apart from getting my order wrong apparently due to the new waiter and having to raise it with that avoid at all cost female waitress, it was terrible quality and poor value. Finally he gives an apology and then promptly whisks my dish away, presumably to avoid other diners from noticing the terrible dish and obvious source of embarrassment.

Life goes on and whilst l believe in karma, rest assured l won’t be back, ever!

However the real purpose of this review is to inform potential future victims of my awful experience and so you have now...

Budapest Schnitzel and Eating House in Elsternwick serves up hearty, authentic Hungarian cuisine. We decided to try their “Best of Budapest” banquet and upgraded to a 3-course meal for an extra $15 per person, a choice we didn’t regret!

The meal started with a comforting chicken soup, simple yet full of flavor. The banquet itself was a feast with generous portions and a great variety of dishes. The chicken schnitzel was perfectly crispy and delicious, while the crumbed mushroom with dilled goat cheese was a flavor bomb we couldn’t get enough of. The goulash was rich and hearty, and I loved the nokedli noodles, which I tried for the first time. The cevapcici Balkan sausages was a touch dry but still very tasty, and all the sides were fresh and flavourful.

For dessert, we had the apple and walnut strudel. It was good, though a little heavy on the walnuts for our taste, but the custard it came with was absolutely delicious.

And just as we were about to leave, we spotted the túrógombóc on the menu, a semolina and creamed cheese dumpling rolled in sweet crumbs, topped with sour cream, and dusted with icing sugar. It turned out to be the highlight of the meal and easily the best dessert I’ve had this year. Simply unforgettable!

Overall, Budapest Restaurant offers fantastic food with attentive service. If you’re craving authentic Hungarian flavours, this place is...

Best Hungarian food in Melbourne @budapestrestaurant their signature and massive size schnitzels are a must and ofcourse are a crowd favourite too. We also tried: Nokedli bolognese, such a great entree to start your meal with, very interesting texture but loved the flavours. Definitely worth a try. Chicken paprika with pickled salad, the flavours in this one was super comforting, chicken was very very tender and the portion size was so big. Must try. I loved the pickled salad it was my favourite. Milk fed veal schnitzel was so perfectly thin and crispy, very tasty and comes with mashed potatoes and salad. Absolutely a delight to eat this and the size is so massive, yes you can definitely share one between two people. Highly recommended. Also tried a Hungarian classic rum styled drink called palinka, oh boy, it burned everything just from one sip, super strong but a good one. Must try for hardcore alcohol lovers. Also they have got a specials menu for refreshing summer cocktails do check that out. The service is very prompt and the staff are all very welcoming, attentive and friendly. You will for sure have a great time here with your special one or loved ones. Beautiful charming ambiance, perfect for a date night as well

This Hungarian restaurant has been in operation for over 15 years and specialises in slow-cooked dishes, grilled dishes and their famous hand-cut and crumbed to order schnitzels. 🥘 𝐆𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐢 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐃𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 ($19.5) 🌭 𝐂𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐩𝐜𝐢𝐜𝐢 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 ($19.5) 🍗 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐥 ($35.5) 🐮 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐤 𝐅𝐞𝐝 𝐕𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐥 ($46.5) 🥬 𝐒𝐚𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐤𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐭 ($7.5) 🍄‍🟫 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐞 ($7.5) To start, cevapcici were charred nicely and served with mustard. Classic Hungarian goulash was rich with a tomato-y taste and the soft Nokedli (Hungarian dumplings) soaked up all the flavours. Most of the main dishes could be ordered in smaller starter portions which allowed for more variety. For schnitzels, both were thin, lightly crumbed and didn’t taste excessively oily. All the schnitzels are served with mashed potatoes (tossed with onion and parsley) and cabbage slaw. Mushroom sauce was more stock-based rather than a creamy consistency with a gentle kick of paprika. Sides/sauces and opt for chips at additional costs. The new banquet menus are a great option to try a bit of all their classic dishes and perfect for groups too! [invite]
