Charm’n’Chicken — Restaurant in Melbourne

This is my favourite charcoal chicken shop and the only shop I'll go to. When I first moved to the area 20 years ago I tried every chicken shop around as I'm super fussy about my chicken, gravy and chips and this shop ticked all the boxes. No one can compare - so much so I refer to "My chicken man" when I want this for dinner! I'm going to make a big call and say he has the best chips in Melbourne - super crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and loads of chicken salt - pair them with the gravy and you're in heaven. The chicken is perfection - cooked fresh and always moist and the skin is so flavoursome - they also come stuffed or unstuffed. There's a great selection of salads and the chicken pine nut salad is another must try. Stop reading this review and get down there and be warned - ordered the next chip size up than you intended too or you'll be regretting...

Thought I'd give this place a go as my usual go-to place is closed over the New Year holiday period. Ordered via Door-dash at Midday, and as a new customer assume they'd probably dish up one of their better chooks in the Half-Chicken & Chips meal. Alas, it was not to be unfortunately.

The Chicken itself presented with a very dark brown crust overall (which may be ok if it was freshly cooked, as I don't mind a nicely charred & caramelised skin) however it was bone dry throughout the whole chicken. The wing was essentially cremated and inedible. The whole thing reeked of this being a re-heated chicken from the previous day. 1 out of 5

Chips, very well cooked and crispy however a tad over-salted for my liking but generally no major complaints. 4 out of 5.

Can't say I'll be going...

If you're short dinner and the family is hungry, this is the place to go. Five star purely for the amount of times I've been in without complaint, and has everything you'd expect from the local Chicken shop. Chips are fantastic, and the salads are really great too - especially the Caesar. If you're looking for something different, try the schnitzel burger. It's huge and great value for its price.
