Update 19 March 2021 - there is a new indoor water who charged me double the price for a takeaway bottle of wine. Lucky I asked for a receipt! This has never happened before. December 2020 This is still one of my favourite places in Melbs, despite the fact that I haven't reviewed this place recently. The service is excellent, friendly and welcoming. I ordered a spritzer for the first time and it was yummy, and my partners orange wine was delish! The food here is fantastic, and the wine is always special. This is a great place for people watching too. Oh happy days! Previous review - January 2016 This is the place to go for a quiet drink. I love to sit here and people watch as the people walking past are so eclectic. The service here is friendly and efficient and the food comes from the European kitchen for a fraction of the price. I've been here a number of times over the years, and this is one of my favourite Melbourne institutions. The wine list is amazing, simple but with some great quality wines as you'd expect. And you can grab a bottle of wine or beer to take home, and best of all this place is open till late. One of the best ways to spend a lazy afternoon.

Awesome seasonal food with extensive wine list. One can expect quality, attentiveness and a good time at this joint. I have visited this place for the third time and will be back for more. Great ambience with old school charm and antique interior. The seating for City Wine Shop is combined with The European. Siglo and The Melbourne Supper Club are upstairs, which makes a great transition to lounge and chill out at night. You can also finish off with gelato next door at Spring Street Grocer. To me, these joints make an essential Melbourne experience. P.S. The ox tongue was particularly special and noteworthy. Also the cod roe crumpet!

I’ve been going to city wine shop and the European (next to each other) for the last decade and they never disappoint. They introduced a more limited but delicious menu. We ordered the confit duck l’orange, eggs Benedict, grilled zucchini and green beans. I couldn’t fault anything as they were so well made. Duck was so soft and juicy with generous serving of jus, hollandaise on the eggs were buttery and creamy, the grilled zucchini was so flavoursome (my favourite) and green beans with confit shallot was just amazing.

The wine and service was spectacular until our group was served by this rude waitress with blonde hair. I called up to organise my birthday drinks at this venue and I was not told they were a maximum of 10 people at once. The table has enough room for more people and after spending around $500 you would think that there might have been some leeway or other options available. But she was so rude that I just left. What is even more disappointing is that I was recommended this venue. I work in the wine industry. I deal with customers and reps on a daily basis and I will be telling them about this experience. The French man was lovely but my birthday drinks experience was a disaster and I won't be coming back. All of my friends, family, customers and representatives will be...

My friends and I came here in the afternoon for drinks and something to eat. The wine was great, but the service was horrendous. There was a woman who served us that was so rude. Every question we asked was met with a passive aggressive answer. It was incredibly surprising, given the hit restaurants and bars have taken and as it was the first weekend of restrictions being lifted. We were quite nervous asking her more questions and as a result we ended up leaving to another bar. She had brown/blonde hair which was tied up in a high bun. Her service was an awful representation of City Wine Bar’s reputation. Word of advice - when you have customers willing to come out and support local businesses take care of...
