Yesterday, April 12 at 1300, I went to the box office of the Princess Theatre to book a seat for myself and my assistance dog. My assistance dog was labelled a "mobility aid", that is the same as a walking stick or a wheelchair, with no cognisance by the staff at the theatre, and seemingly the management of the theatre who formulates such policy and have no understanding of disability, of her sentience and the fact that she is my companion 24/7. I was advised that if I had a human companion that person would be entitled to a free seat. This is not a privilege accorded to the only sentient being currently in my life, in whom I have absolute trust. It is mutual feeling between myself and my assistance dog. No human companion in receipt of a free seat because I have a companion card , can or could, provide me with the same level of assistance and dedicated labour as this particular dog. A dog who I regard as my very best friend and dare I say, confidant.
So, I was advised that if I wished to attend the Princess Theatre, my assistance dog would have to either sit under my seat making it uncomfortable for both her and myself (and probably the person adjacent as well) or in the aisle which is not only a fire hazard (I understand it is illegal to place objects in the aisle that potentially obstruct the exit) but a threat to the safety of my dog. Previously I had been advised by the Mariner Group, the organisation responsible for bookings at the theatre, I could sit in a freestanding plastic chair in a wheelchair space with my dog.
This policy approach by The Princess Theatre is an approach that is 100% ableist, stigmatising, humiliating, speciesist, and dehumanising. It ranks disability which is unequivocally in breach of the Vic. EOHRC and Commonwealth Anti-Discrimination Act. This policy approach places me and everyone else with an assistance dog on the same level as they perceive my assistance dog. That is, an approach that sees her as an animal that is nothing more than property and has no inherent worth outside of that accorded to a wheelchair, prosthesis or a stick to be stuffed under a chair like a bag. A human companion has space and a free seat whereas a canine assistance companion is relegated to being squashed into a space together with me or exposed in the aisle to passing for traffic.
I understand that people wish to go and see Jesus Christ Superstar and similar shows, but I hope in doing so, they keep it in mind they may be supporting an organisation that actively discriminates against disabled people.
Perhaps they could make note of this and, when attending, raise their dissatisfaction with the policy with the staff at...
Read moreI visited The Princess Theatre in April 2025 to see Jesus Christ Superstar, and I had an absolutely wonderful time. I’ll try to keep this review focused on the venue, but honestly, the show was phenomenal and one of the best I’ve ever seen! If you get the chance to catch it on tour, don’t miss it.
As for the theatre itself, it’s a Melbourne icon and a staple for all things theatre and performing arts. It has that classic, old world charm with ornate detailing, rich red carpets, and grand entryways that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The historical charm and elegant finishing touches really set the mood for an exciting night out. There’s also a themed café next door, which is a lovely spot to visit before the show.
The staff were fantastic, friendly, helpful, and always up for a chat about the performance. I bought some merch and refreshments, and everyone I interacted with was warm and welcoming. Like most theatres, snacks and drinks were on the pricier side, but the selection was decent, including chips, lollies, Pringles, and a range of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.
Navigating the venue was easy thanks to the team of ushers stationed at the doors and throughout the foyer, ready to guide guests to their seats whether you’re sitting in the stalls or the balcony. Inside, the theatre is spacious with plenty of seating. The chairs were reasonably comfortable with enough room between guests, though if you’ve got long legs, you might find yourself brushing up against the seat in front. My only gripe was the view from where we were seated under the balcony and towards the left side of the stage. The sightlines weren’t ideal, and it was tricky to see everything happening on the left side of the stage. I’d recommend aiming for a front or balcony seat for a clearer view.
Overall, I absolutely love this theatre. It makes me feel proud of Melbourne’s thriving arts scene and the care we put into preserving our beautiful performance spaces. Parking near the theatre is limited and mostly in paid structures, but the venue is super accessible via Parliament Station, which is right next door and part of the City Loop. Seeing Jesus Christ Superstar at The Princess Theatre was such a memorable experience and as a bonus, we even caught the cast coming out of the stage door after the show (just to the left of the building). I can’t wait to return for another...
