EDIT: I was wrong! I received a message from Walter explaining that it was a mistake, an issue that happens sometimes if the dough spends slightly too long in the mixer. āItās a constant work, one Iām trying to solve, looking at changing the size of the mixer again, as the small mixer over heats the dough,ā he says. He offered a refund! I regret not talking to him first before posting a public review like this. Thanks for reaching out and restoring my faith in your excellent donuts @doughboysdoughnuts !
ORIGINAL REVIEW: How can this donut be so dry at 8am? Iāve finally worked it out - Doughboys dough is simply not the soft gooshy variety I adore so much, no matter how fresh it is. I must have low-brow tastes because the thought of smashing another $4.50 Danielās blueberry cheesecake donut makes me happy and this $7 one made me angry. Because also FAR TOO SWEET! Do not buy this pecan maple donut. Get the old fashioned cake-style one though. That was good.
AN UPDATE: Matcha flavour was wonderfully strong but the texture of the dough made me wish Iād come at 11am when they were fresh (this was 3pm). Definitely a great idea and, if fresh and gooshy, would be awesome - called the āmatcha tripleā. Because matcha three ways?
INITIAL REVIEW: The eggnog filled brĆ»lĆ©e donut was fun texturally, with its crystalline crackle and abundantly filled creamy interior, and also definitely not too sweet, but the flavour? I actually donāt think Iāve ever had eggnog but isnāt there meant to be alcohol? Didnāt detect it. To my surprise (because definitely too sweet) my favourite was the old fashioned with ginger glaze. Not a raised dough, a cake like more dense texture but really good! Almost honeycomb in cross section after the deep fry (not a baked donut), wonderfully chewy and oily. The classic cinnamon sugar was dry - Iāve been spoilt by the moistness and goosh of Cookie Cultureās incredible creations (her donuts are only on Sundays, in Lygon...
Ā Ā Ā Read moregourmet donuts are the only definition i could give this place, as they are expensive, but so elborately made and thought for, with their sheer appearance carrying the weight of its brand. service was lovely, store was cute, and would be imaginably lively during the day. i came when it was nearing close, and they still had every flavour on hand i believe. it's a uniquely looking huge donut, asking for $7 a piece at the least it seems. I for one decided to go all in and bought 4 and spent a good $32 on mine, as i was eager to taste what quality i was missing out on in regular donuts! i had them all over 2 days and they were still in good condition, or at least i had hoped. its a bit difficult to explain but theres an artisan taste about these, and the strange culmination of flavours were so strange and unascertained that i cannot even tell if i like or dislike the donuts. i can certainly say it tastes good but i can also say that i didn't quite enjoy it as much. i think im having an existential crisis...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreReally good quality doughnuts - up there with other Melbourne doughnut places you hear about. Tried both the cinnamons - old fashioned and original. Very nice! The original was a lighter spongier texture which I preferred. The old fashioned was crunchy on the outside, crumbly on the inside and had a darker outer appearance compared to the original - kinda tasted like a deep fried cake and definitely reminds me of older style cinnamon doughnuts that you'd get from carnivals and fetes many years ago. The standout for me was the cheesecake bomba. The filling absolutely blew my mind (it was so creamy and rich) and the white chocolate flavour was spot on! I love that the doughnuts weren't super duper sweet either. Whilst still sweet, they were balanced and easy to...
