Gelato UNOU — Restaurant in Melbourne

I took my students here a couple of weeks ago from a local special needs school. I made them a menu sheet so they could order using their voice. (The kids I teach are predominantly non verbal.) Not only does this venue serve some of the best coffee ice cream I've ever eaten but their accessible entrance meant we could do this activity with our kids who have very complex physical disabilities. The staff were fairly open to listening to my kids order an ice cream for themselves. One girl in my class is 19 and it was the first time she went to a counter of a shop and asked for the flavour she would like to eat using a switch. To the owner, please look into getting a communication access symbol. Your staff were fantastic listening to our kids who used my handmade menu sheet to make their order. They are very capable of getting the training required to make your business fully communication accessible!

Some of the parents of the school were truly amazed that their children were looked at as normal by the staff here. They were talked to as appropriate to their age. They were listened to and they were given generous portions (more than we could finish tbh.) The staff even printed a receipt for me so we could cover the excursion.

Usually love the ice cream here however since the lines have been so long had to wait till late to go in and unsurprisingly there was nearly no flavours left. I asked to taste a flavour and was told I couldn't due to Covid which seemed odd since you don't double dip the spoons, and it goes straight into a bin. Got the vanilla flavour to be safe but tasted very bland and almost like vanilla from the supermarket. Was expecting a stronger vanilla bean flavour. My partner was excited to see his regular flavour salted caramel was there only to discover it had been mistakenly mixed with coffee. He hates coffee and couldn't get the taste out of his mouth. Best gelato or ice cream around, definitely 5* quality—sadly the triple scoop cone I always purchase has dwindled over the past two years; until today I was handed what appeared like a double scoop or two small mandarin sized balls, there were only two other patrons so no rush or reason to be stingy; no mistake, i was charged for the triple. Their triple scoop was over half a litre a year ago, now it’s more like a quarter of a litre or less; sad. Next time I get a small triple scoop cone from here I will probably just start buying a litre of somewhat inferior ice cream from the supermarket, meh, cape byron or connoisseur ice...
