Mabel’s might be known for their cakes and pies, but we came in for brunch and went heavy on the savoury side. Ordered all three sandwich/burger options — overall, solid café food done right.
The beef cheeseburger was my pick of the lot — simple, nostalgic, almost like a Macca’s cheeseburger but with way better ingredients. The chicken burger was decent too, though I felt the fillet could’ve had more meat compared to the batter. That said, the chipotle sauce tied it together nicely, and the buttery potato bun across all three burgers worked a treat. The BLT was stacked with bacon — not the highest-end cut, but I’ll take a generous amount of bacon over a stingy serve any day.
The sides were just as generous. We ordered a small chips, and the staff were upfront in telling us not to bother with the large since we’d already gone big on food. Portion size was huge and much appreciated.
Tried the steak and cheese pie too, which was surprisingly great. Not your typical Aussie meat pie — the pastry was buttery, the filling juicy, and honestly better than some places that specialise in pies. To top it off, we were given a complimentary cake (what they’re best known for), and while I’m not much of a cake person, everyone else at the table loved it.
What makes this place five stars for me is the service. The owner is a chilled, genuine guy who takes the time to explain the food and set expectations — not trying to oversell it as anything fancy, just food done well. And that’s...
Read moreBest steak and cheese pie, let alone best pie I’ve had ever. Been on a hunt for the best pies around Victoria and never have I been so satisfied with this cake store that serves the most underrated pies. Heard their sandwiches are just as good.
Pastry casing had a nice toast but still able to hold that piping hot generous golden treasure of steak. The steak itself was not overcooked which I find with many steak pies, and they were cut in smaller chunks which had a taste similar to your mince pies. Perfect filling. The pastry top was super flaky too which is a big win for a pastry lover like me who is always looking for texture. A textbook perfect pie for me - except on a bigger scale. $12 for a huge pie, and my partner and I were wanting to go for another pie (chicken leek mushroom) despite being full in the early morning.
Got a soy flat white, using Supreme Coffee beans, super tasty and velvety too!
Gonna get myself one of their aesthetic cake slices next time - heard they taste as heavenly as it looks!

Read moreSearched for popular cafes, Toorak and that's how we found "Mabels". Service is friendly, menu is hard to decide because once you walk inside, you are met with a range of delectable pasteries, to die for cup cakes and mouth watering cakes. Reined the impulse for sweets and had my normal scrambled eggs on toast. Eggs cooked to perfection, freshly baked bread slices toasted and hubby had the "BLAT" with potato bun. What the hell is a "potato bun?". Waiters response.... "It will change your life". Imported bun from the States and similar to a brioche bun but not as sweet. Gotta say, he wasnt lying. I'll be back for the "BLAT". I loved the simple observations from staff with moving chairs to put your seating comfort first, dog friendly and the coffee and teas are also on point. Oh, and by the way. Those cakes I mentioned earlier did not escape me. I took 4 chocolate cup cakes and a slice of the whimsical sprinkle, sponge and cream cake. I was not disappointed! I will be a returning customer. Get on down...
