Last night my girl and I ordered some food from Mexican Street Food by Little Flock - which unfortunately turned out to be a bit of a schmozzle. Placed the online order and got a confirmation that we could pick our order up at 820pm ... when we turned up, they had no record of the order and instead of an apology and showing willingness to see how it could be sorted out, we got an extremely passive aggressive reception by one of the owners (also the chef), who was dismissive of our issue and spoke to me through gritted teeth. Because I stayed there and dug MY HEELS in (not what i wanted or think i should have to do btw), she agreed to cook our dinner for us. Luckily, the other owner turned up, apologised and worked it through to a successful resolution. Sadly, when we finally ate, the food was overly salty (the corn as well as the beef tacos) - but we did love the flan.

I know that this is a difficult time for peeps generally and restauranteurs/small business owners and I feel for you all, but in hospitality, as in life, it's better to just keep your cool, work through the situation respectfully and own your part in it. Thanks Michael (@ Mexican Street Food by Little Flock) for taking the time to do that with us, it was greatly...

The food’s really good here but the service was less than optimal.

Little Flock has changed radically. It now serves what it calls Mexican street food. The restaurant decor is excellent. Bright, breezy and attractive. We had the back room which was lovely and quiet. Later in the night they put some nice Mexican music on.

We were a party of seven and were very happy with our dishes tonight. We started with the Tlayuda which was fresh and delicious. The only problem I had with this dish was having to share it. It’s a beauty. We all had different tacos and tostadas. Variously tried by our party were the caramones (with prawn), carnitas (with slow cooked pork) and verduras (with beans and zucchini flowers). We then shared tacos. We tried the beef and the pork tacos respectively. Both were excellent.

Our wine was the Red Hill Pinot Gris, a great choice with the food.

This is a fresh and vibrant restaurant. Mexican can be very hot and miss in Melbourne but it’s done very well here. The service tonight was frankly a bit weird at times. It didn’t match the vibrancy of the place and fell a bit flat. The good news is that it shouldn’t stop you...

The food was tasty, however my partner spilt some food on his trousers towards the end of the evening. The guy who was the only one serving in the restaurant was talking to a table of people. A woman came out from the kitchen carrying a plate of food and when my partner asked for her assistance and she pointed to the guy who was chatting at the table. I looked around and saw some serviettes sitting in glasses on shelves. When I selected one I heard the guy raising his voice and my partner explained the situation. After this the guy left the table he was chatting at, starting banging the cupboards, collected our plates clanging them together. My partner and felt uncomfortable and decided to leave. When we paid for the food I mentioned to the guy how I was sorry but I needed a serviette and explained why again. He dismissed me and did not reply. I don't understand why he was so annoyed. We won't be going back again because of this...

After finishing our meal, my wife made a confession. In 21 years together she never told me she dislikes Mexican food. Except this place - this one she loved! We ordered 5 items - Tlayuda which has a crisp corn tortilla with a smear of bean sauce covered with lettuce, cheese and avocado; Tlacoyo which has a soft thick blue corn tortilla with bean sauce and chopped peppers, onion and coriander; Chile Relleno which is a large mild chile stuffed with cheese and fried then covered in sauce; and one each of prawn and zucchini flower tostadas. Everything was light and fresh and the amount we ordered was perfect. It was only afterward that we realised we had just eaten a gluten free vegetarian meal without intending to. Run by a husband and wife Aussie team who travelled the length and breadth of Mexico to gather recipes and learn how to cook authentic cuisine, we were very pleased with the food and their friendliness and will definitely be back.

Little Flock is .a smaller cafe on High Street Northcote. I visited on a Saturday morning and there was a good flow of customers... I quite like the menu and they are using local organic produce. The owner was the barista and I really enjoyed watching him at work. He is clearly passionate about coffee and he had a very scientific vibe with scales, timers and all the kit the keen coffee aficionado's enjoy. My coffee - Laté, had an strong licorice tone and was enjoyable. For breakfast I went for sweet potato hash. Served in a small cast iron skillet, it was sizzling when it arrived. The sweet potato, bacon, tomato were all well cooked and tasty. The egg was well cooked. Overall I do recommend this cafe in an area with many breakfast choices.
