Kaya toast terrible, unauthentic, overpriced, poor service. Spectacularly disappointing. I'll come back with details. The Details: We ordered two servings of the Kaya toast with half boiled eggs, butter, and Kopi ( a type of coffe made a particular way) when the restaurant was not particularly busy on a Sunday around 2pm. There were about 10 diners in the restaurant. We are both regular visitors to Singapore and southern Asia and are both in love with the Kaya toast experience, so were excited to discover we could access it here in Melbourne. Despite ordering all at once, we received the toast in two separate servings about 8 minutes apart. Neither had the half boild eggs or Kopi delivered at the same time. The Toast was made from some extremely airy bread that had very little substance and no guts to it - the toast just flopped and gave out. Typically it is served on crustless dense toasted bread, so it looked like someone had popped down to the shop and got some cheap bread that suited sandwich making. It was served on plates that could have been hacked from stonehenge that were stone motherless cold - and so as a result, so was the toast. The butter we ordered to have with it arrived as a small pat that was barely enough to cover one slice of toast, and definitely not in the traditional manner where the butter and kaya is applied in 2-3mm thick slabs on top of the toast. I'd estimate it was about 30g worth, and the price for this 'extra' was enough to purchase nearly 750g of butter at the supermarket. When we saw it on the menu we were surprised at both the price, and that it was a separately ordered item from kaya toast. We assumed it would be very generous given the price. It was so little and unexpectedly so we had to order an additional serve of butter for the same exorbitant price. That took another 7 minutes or so to arrive. The toast continued to get colder. When the eggs did finally arrive about 15 minutes after the second lot of toast arrived they too were served on freezing stonehenge offcuts and as a result, they, too were freezing and unappetising. By this time we didn't have any toast to have with them, so we just left them. But this time we were absolutely not at all enjoying the experience one little bit. Then the final let down - the coffee arrived and it was kust that - coffe, not Kopi. two very different things. It may have been nescafe. Also in Stonhenge. Also cold. We left in disgust....

We started with some prawn dumplings, some roti and peanut sauce, a roti canai curry chicken and char koay teow. I loved the dumplings so much I had to get a second serve! The roti was also perfection so deliciously fluffy and not to mention the peanut sauce! Unbelievably yummy and such a generous portion (nothing upsets me more than a tiny satay dipping sauce).
My husband thoroughly enjoyed his chicken curry and ordered a second roti to mop up the extra sauces. I was intrigued by many of their beverages, the offering is very extensive and it was quite a difficult choice. In the end I settled on the delicious watermelon juice and the mango mania.
I loved the watermelon as it was just so refreshing but the mango was also interesting with its watermelon balls and textural jelly pieces although a little sweet for me. The menu does mention that they add sugar to this to sweeten the natural fruit but there is also the option to opt out.
We finished with dessert, my husband going for the banana fritter but my interest piqued by the sweet banana roti given how much I had enjoyed the bread earlier. I would liken this to a crepe style dessert and thoroughly recommend trying it. Loved the creamy vanilla ice cream with this too. I would also definitely suggest making a booking as there wasn’t a spare seat...
