Date of visit: 13 December 2019, 7:00pm. Excellent location within a vibrant area of Knox Shopping Centre. Sushi Jiro felt felt new and modern, with fresh, clean decor. There appeared to be plenty of seating at the sushi train, however it is a popular place to visit and you may expect a short wait at popular times. The sushi train had an excellent selection that was constantly refreshed. You can use an ipad to order plates not on the train. The hot selection on the train may not be hot, especially if it's been out for a while. I tried okanimiyaki off the train, it tasted cooked but was maybe just above cold. Not sure if I'm a fan of okonimiyaki -tried it it once in Osaka (didn't really enjoy it there) and the Sushi Jiro flavours tasted authentic compared to the one I had in Osaka. Hot food can be ordered off the ipad. I ordered dumplings from the ipad and they were served hot - not the best dumplings I've had, not the worst. The sashimi from the train was ok. The nigiri off the train, though was excellent and if I could keep eating I would. The nigiri was some of the better ones I've tasted in Melbourne (including Sushi Jiro in Boxhill Central). We ordered cold soba noodles off the ipad - it had sutble, delicate flavours - very nice. Desserts were good - Tiramasu Mochi was beautiful, chocolate cheesecake was good (and another example of Japanese cooking not quite hitting the mark with western desserts - I've experienced Japanese takes on western desserts in Japan as well). Seating at the train can get a little cramped, and there's no where to hang your coats (was expecting hooks on the wall behind us like you'd find in Japan). The stools on which you sit might also get a little uncomfortable if you have back problems. Overall, I'd go back to Sushi Jiro at Knox in a heartbeat; some excellent menu choices and more yet...
Read moreWe were there on Sunday for a quick dinner and at 8 pm, the manager (I assume) came around letting us know that the last order was 8 pm as the kitchen was closing.
At about 8 pm, while there were still customers eating and the sushi train was still going, one of the staff members started taking off the lids on the sushi plates. One of the customers told her that there were flies flying around and it was probably better that they left it on while people were still eating. She did not reply and continued to take off the lids.
The nature of a sushi train restaurant is that people were eating very close to the plates of sushi. I was still eating when she started taking off the lids. I decided to stop eating after she disregarded the customer's advice as it was very off-putting and unhygenic.
We told the same girl while paying for the bill that it was very and unsanitary to be taking off the lids of the sushi plates while customers were still in the shop and still eating. She said it was cause they were closing. I reiterated the point that there were still people in the shop and still eating, but she just stared at me blankly.
Surely there could be a better way to handle this - either wait for the customers to leave or take the sushi plates off the train instead of just of just taking off the lids and letting the plates go round. The shop was suppose to close at 9 pm and not 8 pm.
Pretty poor response from staff too after feedback was given.
Separately, I ordered a chawamushi before the kitchen closed at 8 pm and no one had the courtesy to tell me that the order would not be fulfilled. I asked the same girl about it and she said "oh it's been reduced to $0" without any apologies.
Poor service and average food. Disappointing as we had a much better experience when we had...
Read moreWe went on the 27th December for dinner, there was no sign at the door, at the table, at the self order screen or anywhere at the restaurant that advise customers that they will charge you a public holiday surcharge, we were not told by any of the staff either for the 15% addition charge, if I did not check the bill, I will not know that they actually charged me 15% extra, not all restaurant charge surcharge on public holiday, the restaurant cannot expect their customers to just know about it. The staff did not even mention about the surcharge until I question that additional cost, the staff ask me, "no one told you about the surcharge?", I said NO, no one ever mention it to us at all", but she charged me anyway, the restaurant can add whatever charge they want to charge BUT they must inform all customers beforehand, not just charge customers without telling them, customer is allowed to not accept that additional charge and go somewhere else, if I did not check the bill, I wouldn't know they actually charged me that 15% extra, it is not acceptable. The restaurant can claim they always charge 15% surcharge on public holidays but they cannot expect all customer to just know about it, it is not honest to not inform customers, not put any sign at anywhere obvious for customers to see. They also charge surcharge for debit and credit card payment which most places charge it now BUT the staff just said there is surcharge but did not tell customers that they charge 1.6% on credit card and charge 0.6% on debit card. They charge you 15% extra without telling you in any ways, if you don't check your bill, you will never know you actually got rid off for this extra charge. Very disappointed. It is not about the money, it is about their...
