I started with the classics: the filter coffee - strong and aromatic. The masala tea was equally impressive, warm and comforting with a fragrant blend of spices. Then I placed a take away order; starting with the medu vada – perfectly crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and insanely addictive. Seriously, I could have eaten a plateful. For the main event, I ventured into spicier territory. The chicken lollipop was a revelation – juicy, flavorful, and packing a serious punch of spice. Just the right amount of heat to leave you wanting more. But the star of the show, the reason you absolutely must visit Taste of Chennai, is the Dindigul Thalapakatti Mutton Biriyani. This biriyani is the real deal. The mutton was tender and succulent; however, it could have been a bit more softer. But, the rice perfectly cooked and infused with flavor, and the whole dish just sang with authentic Dindigul spices. What truly elevated this biriyani to legendary status were the accompanying gravy. It was both incredibly flavorful and complemented the biriyani perfectly. Seriously, the combination was pure magic. Don't let the simple appearance of Chennai Restaurant fool you. This place is a hidden gem, a treasure trove of authentic South Indian flavors. If you're a biriyani lover, or just a lover of good food in general, Taste of Chennai is an absolute must-try. Ignore the décor and focus on the food – you won't be disappointed! This is a place where the taste speaks for itself, and it speaks volumes!

Taste of Chennai is a true hidden gem for lovers of South Indian cuisine! The food is exceptionally authentic and packed with flavor. The idlies are among the best I’ve ever tasted—soft, fluffy, and perfectly paired with authentic chutneys (unlike the dodgy chutneys you find in other dosa restaurants in Melbourne). The vada sambar and Dindigul-style biryani were standout dishes, showcasing rich, aromatic spices. The service was prompt, attentive, and warm, adding to the delightful experience. And the filter coffee? Absolutely impeccable—bold, aromatic, and the perfect finish to the meal. Someone also recommended we try the vada pav, but we found it to be just okay—the vada had onions in it, which are typically not found in a genuine vada pav. It seemed like they might be using the same stuffing from the masala dosa. That said, it wasn’t too bad, just not as authentic as the rest of the menu. Whether you’re a fan of South Indian food or new to it, this place is a must-try. We’ll definitely be returning whenever we’re craving an authentic and satisfying South Indian meal!

We have been frequenting this place for a few years now and have only mustered the courage to leave a review for others to rejoice. If you are an avid filter coffee lover, then your search for it in Melbourne ends at taste of chennai. This family owned restaurant and indian grocery store combined into one, works its charm only on the passion of the owner who is also the head chef and master dosa connoisseur who not only makes food taste good, but makes it homely and epic with one blow. You will definitely need to try the podi dosa and filter coffee combo however being prompted by another table, we ordered the chicken 65 as well, which was mind blowing and a perfect missing link to the plain dosa. Am yet to try their biryani and other mains which i will, no doubt, in due course. The Filter coffee here is the mega super star, small steel shot glass with frotthy filer coffee made with immense passion and love, gives your soul the satisfaction and contentment you desire..

This is in response to the restaurant’s reply which was given based on my 1st review below (the star line)…

First and very important… WE VISITED YOU’RE PLACE FOR THE FIRST TIME… and I’m NOT from Epping. So please don’t lie.

Not sure from where you pulled out this incorrect information that we have visited you several times. This is the first time and definitely the last time we’re visiting.

Your reply below itself shows your rudeness. So I don’t have to say anything further.

Secondly, we were 4 adults and 1 child… we ordered a dish per person and missing out on one order means one person compromising their dinner. And I AM surprised actually that this is surprising you.

Rudeness can still be tolerated, but not a lie. And you’re lying that we asked the order for free. If so, then we wouldn’t have sent it back.

I CLEARLY mentioned to keep both orders on vada separate from sambhar TWICE. And you CONFIRMED any saying YES SURE NO PROBLEM. And then your staff said “You take this order, we will make the other one correct”. And then you said you were cooking and your daughter didn’t know and served it incorrectly. Is it your customers responsibility to adjust for the lack of your internal communication? You’re not a cheap restaurant. You’re pretty EXPENSIVE. So providing a good customer service is a least you can do.

The reason plates were empty, is because we PAID for that. And wasting food is wasting MY HARD EARNED MONEY. I PAID so I MUST FINISH whether or not we liked it.

You can go and read the review of heaps of other disappointed customers who is talking About your rudeness. You might be really good with your regular customers. But you simply don’t care about your new customers.

Again, I VISITED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. My friend wanted to order for catering with you guys and asked me to check. I’m glad she didn’t order straight away. And now I’ve made it clear that no one in my circle is visiting you guys ever.

You run a business. Ethics is something that you REALLY NEED. So Good Luck on that.

EXTREMELY poor service EXTREMELY RUDE. Mediocre taste. We ordered sambhar vada separately. Firstly due to lack of their internal communication, they mixed up all vada with sambhar and asked us to adjust. When refused, they said they cannot make any more for us. They LIED to us that it was the last plate. They refused to give tap water to us and we had a 5 yr old boy. Can’t stress enough how much the staff were Rude. All this because we asked our order to be served right. They ruined our dinner. One of us who were depending on that order as our dinner had to go empty stomach.

Wouldn’t recommend this to...

I'm responding to the owner's reply to my review: Your response is extremely disappointing and arrogant. Instead of taking genuine feedback from a long-time regular customer, you chose to accuse me of wanting free food which is completely false and uncalled for.

As a business owner, you should be open to feedback and willing to listen when regulars point out a drop in quality. Attacking your customers only reflects poorly on your attitude and professionalism.

I’ve now seen that several others have also given one-star reviews for the same reasons poor quality food, rude behaviour, and unwillingness to accept criticism. One reviewer even reduced their rating from two stars to one after experiencing racist and dismissive treatment.

It’s unfortunate that instead of improving your food and service, you choose to insult loyal customers who speak honestly. Respect and humility go a long way something this establishment clearly lacks. You don't deserve any stars and would have given you 0 stars if possible. Please click on "lowest" in the review section and see for yourself self, so that you can read them and fix your attitude and the taste of your food and stop being delusional and racist.

Initial review:

We’ve been regulars at this shop and have bought biriyani from them for a long time. But today’s experience was absolutely disappointing. When I called to let them know the food was not good, the owner spoke very poorly and was completely unhelpful. His attitude was rude and dismissive he even said he wouldn’t give us free food, which was never what we asked for.

The biriyani itself was terrible it was wet, oily, full of ghee, and had a strange grey colour and smell. The taste was awful. After being loyal customers for so long, the way we were treated was disgraceful and disgusting.

If this is how they treat regulars, I can’t imagine how they treat others. Please avoid this place. One of our friends even got food poisoning and was sick all night after...

We friends 5 of us went to have a proper south Indian breakfast unfortunately we ended up seeing hair in uttapam we ordered 2 serves of idly and vada dipped in sambar aswell which isn't fresh ..I think they haven't microwave enough to make the already cooked idly hot enough So we decided to cancel the remaining order and asked to do it and then a old guy walked to us with full on attitude demanding us to take the remaining food takeaway

Don't waste your money on this restaurant for food

Food 1* Hygiene 1* Attitude 100*

5 people saw there was hair in the food , when the lady took the plate inside the kitchen yuh guys got rid of it obviously ..yuh can't keep your hygiene and expecting customers to have it No one here is interested or have time to degrade your business We 5 of us did a mistake coming to your restaurant and none of us are returning to have unhygienic food

When customer raises a complaint on your food item yuh can't speak to them in a civilised way and resolve the issue instead yuh were showing off attitude, rolling eyes here and there talked about check-in and covid-19 rules It's your duty to keep the check-in barcode at the entrance of your restaurant not inside your bill counter mate and yet we checked-in .. we all are educated and human beings with their senses and responsibilities on to check-in , keeping everyone's health in mind

Yuh already lost 5 customers straight away ...! Think of the rude owner who can't take feedback on his own food which he served us and insulting his own customers.

Be responsible and aware of the food you...
