Visiting the area for the long weekend. I’m over overpriced salads, as this is all people think coeliacs can eat, but still charge the earth.
We figured a meal at the local club would be just the ticket… and they didn’t disappoint.
As we walk towards the entrance we noticed the staff facing the west and realised, they were observing silence for the ode. (LEST WE FORGET)
Upon entry, we were greeted by three staff members who were incredibly friendly and open to having some friendly banter. They really set the tone for a lovely evening.
We made our way to the bistro, had a look at the menu and placed our order. The lady who took our order was super friendly, and she knew what was gluten free and didn’t have to dash off to ask the kitchen staff. She was efficient, Knowledgeable and just really pleasant. I ordered the 300g steak (m) with chips and salad, no sauce and an alternative to the salad dressing to make it gluten free. My husband ordered the pork belly w salad and chips.
I didn’t go to the bar, but, my husband did and when he came to our table, he said he had a great chat with the barman who was as passionate about beers as he was.
I asked for my steak to be medium, and it came out medium. It was perfect. The salad was salad, but it was good with steak and chips.
After we finished our meal, we went downstairs to have a drink (I had a pot of tea). The staff there were just as wonderful.
I could tell the work culture at this establishment looked to be quite healthy. The staff looked like they wanted to be there and that they enjoyed their work.
For those who say the place was packed and they had to wait… yes, that’s what happens when you’re attending places at their peak times. The whole world is understaffed. Be kind to those who’ve shown up. For those who say their food wasn’t exactly as they ordered it… you’re at a bistro with 200 other people, it’s not a 5star restaurant that has 50 guests. For those who say the staff weren’t very friendly, I’m gonna say, it’s...
Read moreLarge group of family and relatives have been coming to Nelson Bay for over 40 years and the RSL for the last 20 years. Quality decreases every year and prices have skyrocketed. Not too mention lack of flavours at the gelato bar compared to previous years, even after special request repeatedly.
30 of us came here last night and spent over $1000 in food and drinks. 10 of us ordered the pork ribs, tasted like boiled stew meat with no flavour, of which dog meat would be better quality, even though there was a tonne of bbq sauce. The side of coleslaw was drowned in mayo, with the corn on the cob and chips being the highlight.
Adding insult to injury, we spent around $100 of gelato, and we clearly told them we had a membership card and they forgot to apply the discount(which might have been due to miscommunication but didn't bother us too much), but then the manager had the audacity to try and fool us, by telling us he couldn't apply the refund to our credit card and reprocess the payment with the applied discount on an eftpos machine which looked state of the art, I'm from Sydney and I was impressed with the look of this machine. Come on mate, it's the 21st century!
For a large group, we don't have many options up here unfortunately, but for a chain of Wests RSL clubs linked to about 5 more in the Port Stephens and Newcastle area, you would expect a higher standard of quality, customer service and abit less deceit.
It seems not only this place, but most places up here don't value the dime us Sydney siders and other tourists spend here during the summer to keep these places afloat and going throughout the rest of the year. I believe there needs to be more competition to the RSL club and its abit of a monopoly for night time dining. I know where I'll be going next time where I feel valued as a customer and get some yummy and good value for money food, and that's only at the 'Game Fishermens Club' in...
Read moreReturned a week later Hawaiian Snitty delish, best meal so far.
I fell in love with the stunning person clearing the tables wearing an arousing scent🥰Sorry had to be mentioned.
A year later and another review this occasion dined up stairs to n the Brasserie. Well lit and warm, sunny seating for a winters day. Snitty was moist, though the crumb wasn't my fav, the prawn skewer topper was disappointing, very commercial, prawns welded on to skewer and the Hollandaise didn't really sing with this. The side salad was the best, freshest edible side salad I've ever received, anywhere!!!, The Salt and Pepper squid looked oily and the same crumb as the Snitty. I think this crumb is too oil absorbent. The chips weren't crispy and had no seasoning. The Onion rings in blue cheese sauce was squirted out of possibly a home brand container, no blue cheese flavour at all. Seemed more like a whole egg mayo.
1⭐Came for lunch. Difficult sign in technology issue. Dim lighting, gloomy. Mood lighting not really creating a sense of vibrancy by day. Menu quite 70's. I selected Chicken Schnitzel. Ready before I could sit down. The chips were not fresh. The salad was not chilled, or fresh. The schnitzel was reheated. Equivalent to a Macca's drive thru. Overall the vibe was gods waiting room Like to an aged care facility. It appears that Wests reply to reviews However from the amount of Low star reviews before mine, there has been no improvement. What has Chef got to say...
