Firstly, the service here was fantastic. The staff truly were so nice and sincere and they worked exceptionally hard. Unfortunately they were completely run off their feet, perhaps due to the Christmas new year seasonal surge. But really they needed double the staff.
I went in with an open mind, thinking that the worst case it'd be on par with a shopping centre indian takeaway and sure it might be overpriced for that but it's a night out so was fine with it. My hungry vegetarian parents and I were seated and it took quite a long time and asking 3 times to get our order taken. As Indians ourselves, we were delighted to converse with the staff in our native tongue and were even more delighted when told it's proper traditional Punjabi food made here.
I could see first hand how hard everyone in this restaurant worked. How much effort, blood sweat and tears have gone into this restaurant. Believe me I recognised it. I really didn't want to say it, but it's the truth. This was hands down the worst indian food I have ever eaten in my life. The service was so nice, so so nice, but the food was so far below par, I honestly have never had such poor quality indian food.
The seekh kebab had the texture of a dry felafel, coated thickly in some red food colouring, and the taste was overwhelmingly of lemon juice and cumin with a hint of red chilli. No tasteable or visible ginger, garlic, coriander, nutmeg only cumin in excess. It lacked that beautiful smoky tandoori taste customers love, and seriously underperformed. I left 2 out of 3 as inedible on the plate. The mint sauce was very nice though.
The naans and roti were decent enough, but nothing exciting. One was overcooked and dry, cracking and snapping instead of tearing.
I was still optimistic hoping that the mild Shahi paneer would be a lovely rich tomato, cream and cashew nut base delightfully soaking and marinating paneer with a beautiful hit of cardamom and cinnamon, and maybe a tiny tingle of spice. Unfortunately another extreme let down. The colour was bright yellow, and although it had visible crushed cashew nuts, the taste was beyond unknown to me. It tasted like the bottom of a tangy pataks sour mango pickle bottle with a cheesy cheese tang.
The dhal makhani was ok. Down the lower end of the scale of acceptability for shopping centre grade take out. The most edible dish of the night. Mediocre but ok.
The rice was, well rice.... Nothing more.
$100 for this food hurt.
I'm very sad to write such a review, I truly am. And even for mediocre food I usually just abstain from writing a review. But I felt that with staff not understanding what I was conveying, a review could provide some feedback to the chefs and owner. I tried to be truthful without harshness while not witholding the truth. I think it could be a great restaurant with some work and wish the staff and owners all the best. And I felt potential customers should...
Read moreGood Morning! :)
As a person from Indian origin I don't recommend this restaurant AT ALL. You can buy a decent home brand food from Coles, Woolworths or Aldi rather than spending your fortune here. Food was Worst than a dog's breakfast! The staff there didn't have any clue on customer service, terrible waiting time for the food to come after the order. Even after the food came, the hilariously cooked food was more than a joke!
Why Oberois : The name has a very interesting History in Indian culture. The food looks fancy on the website.
What went wrong: Everything, starting from customer service, food, the waitresses, the girl on the counter was behaving like she owned the town. ( May be a restaurant) . One of the dishes we ordered had a Hair in the meal!
The nightmare begins : We ordered a few curries & some rotis, after a mouthful of arguments from the waitress, & a waiting game of 70 minutes, we were expecting a high quality meal which was our mistake! As soon as the food came, we were not happy with the quality, taste, & even Quantity, so we have asked the waitress to take back a few dishes, which she only took 1.
No organisational skills, the staff were constantly swearing, a pathetic customer service, sorry No service at all!
You would rather stay hungry for the night than visit this slum! The staff was asking for money as if they were begging! They are serving the food people have no idea about & taking undue advantage. The Garlic naan had no garlic on it.
All in all it was a terrible dining experience and I can understand why the restaurant was full as there was some indian festival at Coffs, the location is wonderful, if only we could have seen out of the window what was being cooked in the kitchen!
Obviously we will not be returning, nor will the 17 people who will be going to Coffs next month, I have told since, or the people they tell. If this had been a $50 dining experience I would still have expected more but to pay $150.00 for terrible food and less than sub-standard service is just a joke.
We expected luxury, and what we got instead was the gluey texture & bland flavor of a wartime MRE. We ate some of our most expensive meals of the year @ Oberois. Unfortunately, they were also the worst. The experience was rendered tortuous by the intensely stupid service. Dinner @ Oberois @ Coffs Harbour! has the honor of being the worst thing I have put in my mouth since the incident with the dish washing soap when i was nine! One of the Most Excruciating Experiences of my life. The Prices are unconscionable. They are ludicrous, a poke in the eye from the fork dipped in hilariously under cooked biryani.
Concluding, Abysmal organisation and service. Our Dinner that night was a disorganised farce by a boycut lady @ the counter, bunch of "Chefs" @ Oberois. If the owner is reading this, do something about it as your staff & food has an honor of being a disgrace in the...
Read moreI recently dined at Indian Flavour Authentic Indian Cuisine with a group of seven, and while the experience started off well, there were several disappointments that ultimately led to this rating.
To begin with, the front-of-house staff was exceptional—friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. They were constantly smiling and ensuring we were well taken care of, which made for a great start to the evening. Unfortunately, the issues arose once the food started arriving.
The first concern was with the vegetable pakora we ordered as an entrée. When it arrived, it was noticeably burnt. I mentioned this to the staff, and they promptly replaced it, which I truly appreciated. However, the replacement did not seem freshly made—it had the texture and taste of something that had been pre-cooked, stored in the cold room, and then reheated in a microwave before serving. This was quite disappointing.
Moving on to the mains, the butter chicken and rice were well-prepared, fresh, and enjoyable, but the same cannot be said for the other curries. Most of them lacked depth in flavor and tasted far from authentic. The biggest disappointment was the dal makhani, which did not have the richness or balance expected from a dish that should be slow-cooked to perfection.
As a chef with nearly eight years of experience, I strongly believe that the restaurant needs to reevaluate its approach to cooking its mains. The flavors, freshness, and overall execution require significant improvement, especially if they want to uphold the authenticity that the name of the restaurant suggests.
I normally refrain from leaving negative reviews, but the quality of the mains was genuinely disappointing. That being said, I am giving three stars solely because of the outstanding service provided by the front-of-house team. I truly hope the kitchen takes feedback constructively and works on refining the dishes, as the service deserves to be complemented by food of the...
