I do not want to take anything away from the baker. The bakery food is lovely. Where things fall woefully short is that awful rude woman with the foul attitude. My advice to the young girl working weekends: you're doing a great job but you do not have to put up with such rude condescending behaviour from a boss who has no idea about customer service herself. The coffee? Frankly, we make better coffee at home with our pod machine than that foul woman who thought she was all over that coffee machine like a pro. My husband's coffee was grainy and bitter and mine tasted like warm slightly flavoured milk, suggesting she used the same coffee grounds after making my husband's coffee to make mine. I usually find take away coffee too strong and ask for ยฝ strength. I didn't ask for that this time because I didn't want to be bothered with more attitude. This coffee was nowhere near even half strength it was that weak. Awful, just plain awful. The good thing is that the bakery food is flavoursome. Unfortunately the pie was barely luke warm, which took away from the taste, and the sandwich did not have fresh chicken. It was processed 'something'. You can all make up your own minds. You may have a better experience. I hope you do, and woman, whatever the heck is going on with you, sort it out and stop taking your life out on the rest of the world. Without customers, you don't have a job/business. So be grateful for every single person who walks through your doors. The customers aren't coming in for you but for the baker's food, and they sure as heck are not there for...
ย ย ย Read moreI recently moved to the Mackay area and bought a house but got stuck in Sarina while I wait for settlement. In my online research I kept on coming across "Sarina Pie Shop - the best pie in the world". I was intrigued and took a chance. I bought a sausage roll (SR) and an apple slice (AS). Sorry, I'm not really into pies.
I'm now going to compare this SR to 50 years of eating the odd SR in Victoria, NSW, ACT and England. It was 'OK'. Compared to Dobinsons in the ACT. Dobinsons are really oily. I thank the chef in Sarina for not making their SR oily.
However, Dobinsons have a better, more real SR taste overall, but the oil/butter is overkill. A bit more moisture, pepper and onion taste would have been great in the Sarina SR. Regarding the pastry, Dobinsons over-flake. It jumps off the SR, and due to the heavy oil content, sticks on your clothing. The Sarina SR is average. It's not particularly flaky. The texture and taste isn't puff pastry either. It's kind of dull and rubbery.
Now to the apple slice. Full score for not being too sweet and for using high quality apples. What has always put me off with apple pies/slices is that many cooks throw in seeds, the twig, skin and all the gunk that ends up in your mouth... and they throw too much sugar in them. This apple slice's contents were perfect. Not so crash hot was the slightly rubbery pastry. Not sure why this is but it did not do much for me. Overall, the AS was good and I'd buy it again. The SR, I...
ย ย ย Read moreWe popped into this pie shop when we were in Sarina for a day, purely based on the reviews online. And we're so glad we did! We initially only bought one steak pie to share. Being British and big pie lovers, we enjoyed the steak pie so much we walked straight back into the shop to buy another, this time, a mince with cheese and bacon. Both pies were so full with fillings, like proper packed with meat! And the flavours, temperature and pastry were just perfection. The smile on the lady's face when she realised we'd returned within 3 minutes because we needed another one of her pies was priceless. We ate both so quickly we forgot to...
