Terrible service, terrible food, terrible vibe.
After a big day exploring the national park, I headed into Kingscote to grab some supplies from Drakes and thought a quick bite would be good. I stopped at Amanda’s for convenience — shop was empty at 4:30 PM on a Friday, and other shops were not so plenty of people visiting in town.
No greeting when I walked in, which was strange considering the shop was completely empty. After a week of visiting other spots on the island with warm welcomes and good vibes, this felt way off. The lady at the register just stared at me — honestly off-putting.
I ordered 4 dim sims. She didn’t ask about salt — I had to ask if they had chicken salt, and she just said “yes.” They were $1.20 each plus a card fee. She asked for my name, so I figured: shouldn’t be more than 10–15 minutes, right?
Wrong.
I sat there waiting... and waiting. No updates, no communication, while the guy in the back was calling out other orders. I was in plain sight, right there. It hit 30 minutes, and I thought — have they forgotten? Or are they just rude?
I finally walked up and asked how much longer. Neither of them said a word. The bloke just walked to the hotbox, grabbed a paper bag, and handed it to me silently. No “sorry for the wait,” not even a “here you go.” I told them straight — I’ve been sitting there like an idiot for 30 minutes while the food was clearly just sitting there. It was honestly pathetic.
The dim sims? Soggy, no crisp, barely any salt. After sitting in a bag for who knows how long, they were inedible.
After this experience, I won’t be back. Looking at other reviews, I’m not surprised. The service is cold, the food is poor, and the shop is always empty — I’ve passed it multiple times this week and never seen a customer inside. Locals probably phone order… and even then, good luck.
The food in the window looked stale. Their “Asian” options looked like a bad attempt at takeaway. It all screamed red flags.
Food: 1/10 Service: 0/10 Atmosphere: 1/10
I feel sorry if this is all Kingscote has to offer.
Updated, you replied, stating I walked out, I went to my car parked in front of the shop and walked back in and sat down, the grunter of a server wouldnt have hurt to even give me a no worries mate about 10mins or anything absolutely Disgraceful service. Maybe have some customer service skills. Far from busy, and if that's your busy, I can see why you are struggling to even acknowledge and attempt to apologise for the poor customer service and pathetic excuse you provided. Both of you seen me sitting there, and both didn't bother to check on my order ? What it wouldn't hurt for some customer service? You want a customer to ask you a lot every minute if their order is ready ?....
Read moreI’ve been meaning to write this review for a long time, and I finally found the time to do so. As a lifelong resident of Kangaroo Island, Amanda’s Takeaway is one of my absolute favorite places to go. While I usually opt for the chicken sushi, I’ve tried various other menu items and have been consistently satisfied with everything. It truly is my favorite spot for sushi on the island.
Service: Friendly and Efficient
From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a smile. The staff at Amanda’s Takeaway are known for their warm and welcoming demeanor. Despite often being busy due to a smaller team, they make it a point to greet you promptly at the counter. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re a regular, you can always expect attentive service. I’ve found the staff to be incredibly nice and helpful.
Atmosphere: Cozy and Inviting
The atmosphere at Amanda’s Takeaway is casual and comfortable, perfect for a quick bite or a relaxed meal. The decor is simple yet charming, with ample seating both indoors and outside. It’s a place where you can feel at ease, whether you’re grabbing a meal to go or sitting down with family and friends. Occasionally, it can be hard to hear when dining in due to the fans, but the delicious food and wonderful service more than make up for it.
Cuisine: Fresh and Flavorful
The star of Amanda’s Takeaway is undoubtedly the food. The menu offers a wide variety of options, but the sushi stands out. The chicken sushi is particularly popular among locals, known for its fresh ingredients and perfect balance of flavors. The menu also features an array of other delicious choices, from sandwiches to seafood, all prepared with care and attention to detail.
Conclusion: A Local Favorite
Amanda’s Takeaway is more than just a place to eat; it’s a local treasure that combines great food, excellent service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Hi, my name is Veera. And I am a school student in the city of Adelaide. I was tasked to and assignment which is about Covid 19 impact on small businesses in South Australia. We have to write a report acting as a member of the local council and choose a small business in the area to give them a grant. Unfortunately, I am not able to give you a grant as I am just a student. I have chosen your business to feature in my assignment. I would love if you could pop me an email giving me some information about how you were impacted during COVID-19 and the recent bushfires, if you were even affected at all.
Could you please reply to this review nd give me your E-Mail as I wouldn't want random people emailing me.
When I reply to the email I will state my schools as well for security reasons.
Kind...
