After a night camped out on Boundary bend and the necessity for an early start our party of three, after looking at maps, declared Swan HIll would be our breakfast spot at a very civil 0830 hours. Not knowing the town, we roamed the main street with no retail eatery experience. There were not many joints open, we chose Jilarty Cafe. It had chairs and tables setup outside and a menu on the window. It looked like an each way bet. We loaded in and took a table. No annoying loud pop music, Papers and self service water. The coffee machine and its Barista looked capable. No pretense. The breakfast menu was comprehensive and suitable priced. $15 to $22. Table service was well timed and before too long we were admiring the Dad's Big Breakfast served on a wood platter and plates of eggs. The Istra bacon was a standout item. I am a convert. Beverages were served with the meal. That is a gold star just by itself. The coffee was excellent. Quality Long blacks and lattes stand out on a road trip, and these babies stood up, clicked their heels to attention, and saluted to my neglected palate. The place does Gelato. An unusual combination. One might be affronted at the dual enterprise, but do not fear. The food and the coffee are the perfect antidote for the wearisome traveller barrelling the Murray Valley...
