Overall: 5/7 this place randomly has a lot of very classic Shanghainese dishes which are a fair attempt at the originals. The service is a bit suss though as one of the dishes we ordered (via app) was randomly cancelled and no one actually came up to tell us. Overall this place has good value and decent tasting food. You may be disappointed taste wise if you’re looking for shang food but they definitely look correct and are very nostalgic.
Pan fried buns 生煎包: 5/7 They make these the right way up! This is the yeasted version with a “puffier” skin. Not my preference, but much better executed than most other places like ding tai fung or taste of shang. The filling is quite good and still has some soup. The skin isn’t too thick and it doesn’t feel too bready.
Braised eel Shanghai style: 4/7 A very nostalgic dish and impressive to see so much eel at this price. However their execution of flavours and preparation of the eel was a bit lacking. The eel texture was a bit mushy and the flavours weren’t great - needed to be a bit stronger and saltier.
Rice crust with fish fillet and tomato: 4/7 The puffed rice thing was really nicely done and worked well with the viscous tomato soup / sauce thing. The soup however doesn’t taste particularly great and doesn’t have a lot of depth of flavour. Kind of overpowered...
Read moreI've been to this restaurant multiple times over the past few years. This time we ordered the Pan-Fried Pork Buns, Braised Pork Belly with quail eggs and Fried Rice. The Pork Buns were flavoursome and generous in size and the Pork Belly proved once again as to why it warrants its attained status as a menu highlight.
In contrast, the Fried Rice is nothing to write home about and probably something that could be whipped up by a hungry uni student at midnight looking to cook up something with leftover ingredients in their fridge.
Service wise, our waitress was attentive and courteous. Most of our orders came out in relatively decent time although surprisingly, the easiest dish being the fried rice took the longest. In relation to atmosphere, the place has a nice fitout, is relatively spacious and can easily accommodate families.
The only issue that I had is that the table of adults next to us was blasting loud music from their phone. Whilst not necessarily a criticism of the restaurant itself, it did affect my dining experience.
Parking wise, you're better of parking in the side streets than going down the alley of eternal traffic hell otherwise known as Rowe Street.
Overall, 257 Home Kitchen is a lovely place that serves consistently good food and I...
Read moreI have lived in Eastwood nearby suburbs for 3 years but it was my first visit to 257 Home Kitchen. I heard from different friend's groups that they were good since quite long time ago but have never paid a visit yet. Now it's the time to leave, so it's my last chance of visiting it.
The overall quality of this Shanghai restaurant is really good and impressive. I like all the dishes that we ordered, and my son said the fried buns with condensed milk (i.e. 炸饅頭/黃金小刀切) was the best among all. It's really delicious 😋
They call themselves private home cuisine (i.e. 私房菜). They have quite many specialty dishes that you can't find from other restaurants. The prices of these specialty dishes are more expensive. My first / last visit was just for a simple dinner with my family so we hadn't tried any of the specialty dishes belonging to "private home cuisine". I believe they are good too but unfortunately I have no more chance to come back and try them.
Highly recommended for anyone who loves Chinese food. Of course they mainly provide Shanghainese food, so you can also order the most popular dishes such as Xiǎolóngbāo 小籠包 and Shanghai Fried Noodles 上海粗炒 that I...
