This is non-arguably the best Viet dining experience I have had in Sydney. My friend and I spotted the place from across the street and decided to give it a try. Just a tip for visitors to Viet restaurants in general: don't be fooled by the typical proper décor and white tablecloth, which does not usually equate to pricey food.
Though they were short on staff for the night (which I later overheard was due to someone taking last-minute leave), we were seated rather quickly and got checked on just as often as we would like. Service was brilliant; the waiters were extra sensitive and responsive to diners' needs, which included closing half the entrance to block the strong wind from our table. All orders and requests were taken with friendly smiles and cheerful voice, plus detailed explanations when asked. I would come again solely because of the service.
But that is not the only thing Bay Hong has to offer. The ambience is just perfect, lighting and music volume were just right i.e. not too bright or too loud. Pictures and décor depicting Northern Vietnam culture are tastefully hung around the cosy space. Diners seemed friendly and polite, many appeared to visit frequently.
Probably due to the understaffed situation, our food took a little while to arrive and dishes were served one after another. It wasn't unpleasant though, thanks to the frequent checking in from the waiters. The food was hands down among if not the most delicious Viet food I have tried in Sydney. Though we were not particularly hungry, we finished all the dishes to the last bite. In fact it was so good my friend (who was visiting from overseas) couldn't get over it and wants to try more Viet food from now on.
This gem is conveniently located in Surry Hills, within walking distance from the city and Oxford Street. Do check out when you have the chance and p'raps before...
Read moreOn our recent visit from Melbourne to Sydney we visited Bay Hong .
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Darlinghurst, it felt like more than just a Vietnamese restaurant – it’s a warm, flavourful experience that lingers long after the meal ends. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with impeccable hospitality, thanks to Adrian and Clayton, whose genuine warmth and attention to detail made the night exceptional.
Adrian’s knowledge of the menu and his ability to guide us through the best dishes for our preferences was impressive. Clayton matched this energy with attentive, friendly service that never felt intrusive – just perfectly timed and sincerely thoughtful. It’s rare to find front-of-house staff who bring both professionalism and personality in equal measure, and these two absolutely nailed it.
The food? Absolutely divine. The lemongrass chicken was a standout – fragrant, tender, and full of that signature Vietnamese balance of sweet, salty, and citrusy zing. We paired this with the seasonal greens, lightly stir-fried to retain their crunch and freshness, and the tofu with garlic, which offered a perfect contrast of crispy edges and soft, silky interior, all drenched in a rich, garlicky sauce that begged to be mopped up. The egg fried rice was the ideal companion dish – fluffy, savory, and generously portioned, it tied the whole meal together beautifully.
Bay Hong strikes that rare balance between refined food and relaxed atmosphere. The menu is full of bold, authentic flavors, and the service – especially from Adrian and Clayton – elevates it to something truly memorable. Whether you’re after a casual dinner or a special night out, this place deserves a spot at the top of your list.
We will be back when next our travels bring us...
Read moreSurprised and Amazed !to start with I am not a big fan of Vietnamese food and to be frank the only thing I know from Vietnamese Cuisine is pho. A friend of Ours has made a reservation At Bay Hong for her 30th and we all did the black Tasting Menu. The EXPERIENCE has totally changed the way I think of Vietnamese cuisine. There are so much more delicious and unique dishes rather than the usual Pho bowls on the Menu, the food here is simply delicious, well priced and the Service is outstanding . The waiter mentioned to us that people don't come to this restaurant for Pho and they don't Have Pho on their menu simply because they are not specialised in it. totally understood ! Why eat pho when you have so many other heart warming dishes to choose from. Definitely will come back and recommended to others ! And one more thing which impressed me about this place ,it is so difficult to find a restaurant these days that have friendly and cheerful staffs and all seemed enjoy what they are doing and Bay Hong is a rare...
