(2.5 stars) Bekya Egyptian Spice is a small chain delivering what they term “Egyptian street food”. Summer Hill, on the edge of the Flour Mill development, represents their third Sydney outlet. The luminously aqua space offers up limited indoor dining, though I suspect there might be intention to expand into outdoor tables on the terrace when the weather improves. Their point of difference is the freshly made flatbread—white or wholemeal—coming out of a little glass box at the end of the front counter. It’s served warm in brown paper bags with lunch “plates” that turn out to be disposable boxes with clear plastic lids, even for those who opt to dine in.
My chicken shish tawook plate ($15.90) included a charred skewer of chook over under-seasoned (and thus bland) Egyptian rice dotted with fried onions, garlic and seasoned vermicelli noodles, a too-wet carrot and cranberry salad where the jewel-like red fruit had barely any flavour at all, and a bell pepper red dip, mahammara, that should have been served with my dining companion’s chicken shawarma plate ($15.90). In his box, mild shreds of marinated chicken were teamed with the same rice, a tabouli salad dominated by quinoa, and my selected dip, babaghanouj.
You can make these bland but healthy meal boxes taste better with a harissa ($2) add-on, and upsize them to a meal with good seasoned fries and a drink for a buck or two more. Vegans are also catered for in the intensely aqua space. However to win over the area’s foodies, and compete with the tasty food on offers at the Flour Mill Markets Summer Hill, they will need to concentrate on...
Read moreGreat little suburban restaurant with okay street parking options around it. Vegetarian Plate for 2 (or 1... if you're like me!) was very tasty and pretty reasonably priced. Yes just two falafel balls, but they weren't tiny either. One of the standouts for me was the fresh Lebanese bread with the toum and hummus dip. Both had a very nice, smooth texture, not chunky and watered down like some other places. The two dolma's were zesty and paired pretty well with the dips too, as did the fried cauliflour. Everything else was pretty decent. Fatoush was fine. Falafel balls, although the two are a decent size, they weren't particularly crunchy, nor did they pack that heat as if they had just been taken out of the deep fry seconds ago. It's admittedly easy to get your hopes up more for good falafel at an Egyptian place, but you could definitely find much better elsewhere. Tahini drizzle over it at least enhanced it. Lastly, babaganoush which is usually a crowd favourite, was my least favourite of the three. Didn't have smokey taste as it does at some other places, felt like it was missing something. That was the only thing I didn't fully finish, which tells you it was overall this plate was...
