I never thought I'd be leaving a less than 5-star review for Bourke St Bakery Alexandria as it has been my absolute fave for over a year now but... the quality check with food production must have gone down in recent months as yesterday (21st July 2024 - Alexandria store at around 1pm; three workers in store at the time), there was a thick, dark hair, deeply embedded in the beef brisket pie that I ordered. I took it to the counter, upon which one of the workers immediately replaced the pie for me but... to be honest I would have preferred a refund as I didn't want to eat another one. It was nice of them to replace my pie but my concern is that they didn't seem all that surprised or else it didn't seem like they were taking the finding of hair in their product as seriously as I would have hoped for a place that serves food?? I say this because I observed the first worker eventually showing my plate (with the hair) to the barista but the barista was just laughing/smirking/smiling and shaking his head in a dismissive way, not in a 'oh no we did a wrong this' manner. So, I'm not sure if this has become a common occurrence that they are no longer phased by it or if they are just dismissive about it because it's not a serious concern to them? But regardless... Known for amazing breads and pastries the original Bourke street bakery has a cult following of regulars who queue rain, hail or shine for its tasty sourdoughs and delectable little baked treats.
My mission on this stiflingly hot summers day was to retrieve pastries for a meeting I was attending at the nearby industrial area of Mascot. As I was wanting to impress my fellow meeting attendees, Bourke Street Bakery was the prefect stopover en route.
Parking is a bit of a pain point, with nothing close by on our first approach. We decided to traverse the block one more time hoping that a sacred park will come available. As it did not, I was dropped at the front door and picked up on the way around again.
The bakery is small with a few tables and chairs. Im not sure whether they had air conditioning inside the store, but if they did it was unable to keep the heat of the day out with temperatures to melting levels inside.
I quickly bought my lemon and chocolate tarts and bid a fond adieu before jumping back into the comfort of our AC'd vehicle. The food here is good. Really good so I bought the cookbook "Bourke street Bakery". Keep up the...
