Recommended by some friends of ours, we headed to Darlinghurst to try out Kaska eatery and cafe. We always love hearing about new places, or just places we haven’t been. Kaska has been open about 6 months but we only just became acquainted to it. At the bottom of Boundary street Darlinghurst on the way down to Rushcutters bay, you’ll find this great little eatery with outdoor tables and an aesthetically pleasing interior with marble features, lounge seating and a very comfortable environment. Staff are friendly and were understanding of our crazy little fella.

The coffee came out fast; a really nice smooth flat white using Mecca beans, and a bold flavourful espresso.

For the food menu, we love that it is more unique than the normal cafes these days: featuring plenty of salads and dishes incorporating fermented vegetables and house made sauces.

The ploughmans plate is something I love, yet don’t often see in a cafe. Probably a nod to the chefs UK background we hear. The plate uses artisanal produce and sauces made in house. It had ham, Maffre cheddar, pickled veggies, a semi hard boiled egg, confit onion jam, apple and walnut salad and grilled bread by Fiore with a side of Pepe Saya butter. It was an extremely generous serving size for the price and incredibly tasty, all the components complementing each other well.

The roast pumpkin ferment bowl was huge and colourful, featuring a wedge of pumpkin topped with a lemony brown rice/quinoa mix, fresh salad items like radish and capsicum, pickled carrot and beetroot, spicy chickpeas and a tahini dressing.

Other than this, there’s plenty of great food; toasties, avo on toast, smoked salmon and the option of add ons like ferments, kimchi, house made hot sauce, sriracha and chilli oil.

I must go back for the affogato. With a salted caramel crumble, you’ve...

First time eating here. Got there and it was clearly a busy time but wasn’t acknowledged by any staff, had to flag someone down after waiting around to figure out how to put our names down for a table. Waited about 20 mins to be seated which was fine because they told us about the wait. Once we were seated about 30mins after first arriving, we placed an order for 2 bacon and egg rolls. Was told by the person taking our order that it would take about 15 mins. We waited an 1 hour and 10 mins for our food. After waiting for about 40mins we asked one of the staff if our order had been lost as people around us who were seated after us were getting their food, we were told there was a really big queue for food. Once we got to the 1hr and 10 minute mark I finally went to the counter and asked and was met with a bamboozled look as to where our orders were. No compensation for the wait was offered. They couldn’t even tell me what had happened and how much longer we could expect to wait. Thankfully when he went to check in the kitchen he somehow emerged with the two bacon and egg rolls but it was such a poor experience over all that we just wanted to get out of there at that point. The food was good, but between the poor service, lack of communication from the staff and the lack of any kind of heating outside as well on a freezing day, I 100% will not be back here. We did get a free cup of orange juice and a cookie between the two of us as compensation for the screw up, but it was such a bizarre experience. I personally would have loved the option to have something taken off the bill rather than extra stuff we didn’t need or want. The place really just lacks character and love… really really disappointing because it has a lot...

The one server there ruined the experience for us. From the moment we went to the counter until we left, she gave us attitude. When ordering, she rudely interrupted us multiple times to ask her colleagues questions. Shortly after we placed our order, she came up and said the kimchi pancake was out of stock and asked if there was anything else we wanted. We told her we just wanted a refund. She had my friend come up to the counter but left her standing there because she didn’t know how to process the refund. After asking her boss, she told my friend to go back to her seat because "her boss is busy."

Later, when the food started coming out, the same server handed us a tuna sandwich, which we didn’t order. We immediately told her, and she insisted we had. My friend corrected her, saying we hadn’t ordered it, and when we double-checked the order before paying, , there was no mention of the tuna sandwich. The server took it away, but not without an attitude. When she handed us the cutlery, she threw the knife and fork onto our table. Soon after, all the food came out, which, in our experience, was neither good nor bad.

When we went to the counter to request a refund for the kimchi pancake and, apparently, the tuna sandwich, a different server assisted us. She was much more cooperative. We told her there were two dishes we needed a refund for, but she told us the tuna sandwich hadn’t even been put through in the system!

Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. The poor service, attitude from the staff, and lack of professionalism left us with a bad impression. The food was average, but the overall experience was ruined by the poor customer service. We won’t...

My beautiful morning has almost gone lol 😂 My first impression to get there because of the advertising matcha 🍵, so I went to the cafe and ordered a cup of hot pure matcha (no added sugar or syrup🫗), one meal (dine in) and 3 sweets (take away), but then they served me a lower quality of matcha which had wried taste. So, I asked them if they made a wrong one for me the waiter said it was the right one, but their matcha had already mixed with sugar or sweetener. However, they offered me to add $2 more to have a better grade which was “ceremony graded” 👈 In my opinion, this is the best way to drink “pure” matcha. I just don’t know why they didn’t offer me at first and didn’t tell me about sugar added. I couldn’t swallow the first cup of matcha (It likes you have a bad cup of coffee in the morning) Also, the advertisement and reality were different. The color and the taste I know how it should be. Moreover, I waited for my breakfast more than 20mins. Also, the table next to me must be waited more than me because those 3 tables that came after her got all dishes while she was waiting her dish to take a pic with her matcha gelato until she almost finished her drink, but she hadn’t got her meal yet 🥹 Anyway, the presentation in the cafe was pretty nice, but the taste was so so. Someone who wants to take their desserts away and have an instagram post I reckon it’s better to have at the cafe because some shouldn’t put in the paper bag hehe 🥺 If I could go back, I would get the high quality of matcha 🍵 ✅ and the Dubai brownie (I love it so much & must try 🤤❗️) P.S. all these were cost $55.8

It was our first time visiting, and I was really looking forward to the avocado. Unfortunately, when I went to order, I was told that the avocado was sold out and that the matcha latte with coconut was no longer available. I was quite disappointed and had to rethink my order. I ended up choosing the tomato with sourdough and scrambled eggs. However, I was surprised to see the person who ordered after me—and sat next to me—receive an avocado toast with a boiled egg. I asked the staff at the counter about it, and she then realized there had been a miscommunication. She kindly offered to fix the order and replaced the tomato with avocado on my plate. Interestingly, the woman next to me shared that she had the same experience—she was told there was no avocado, only to see others receiving it later. The cashier later brought me a cookie as a gesture of goodwill, which I appreciated. Still, I believe there's significant room for improvement. As first-time customers, both of us left feeling disappointed. I hope the owner considers improving the order or stock management system and invests in better team communication to prevent this from happening again. As for the food, it was okay—though a bit salty—and the long black was quite watery.
