(3.5 stars) Like many Sydney suburbs, Mortdale is making the transition from a sleepy two-sided shopping strip leading to the station, to something more befitting of a modern, multicultural suburb. Along with some hip cafes, you’ll find Lankan Railway Cafe in this updating strip. Operating largely from a well-stocked Bain Marie they’re putting out Sri Lankan & Nepalese favourites. Snack on mutton & chicken rolls to start.

If you eat in, try the string hoppers and the chopped up egg kottu roti with their coconut crab curry. For a selection from the dishes on display, the golden spuds eat nicely against the rich bone-in Jaffna goat curry. Flavoured with anchovies, the stir-fried cabbage mallung is pungent and ups the vegetable content of your meal nicely. However it’s the coconut-based Lankan fish curry that pleases me most, with turmeric, fresh curry leaves and lively spicing.

Would return to try the eat-in options based upon the meal...

Everything here is delicious but unfortunately not fresh, and that is a big issue for me. For e.g. the curry, the paratha, the rice, the simosa in the simosa chat is all MICROWAVED prior to serving. If I'm spending a decent amount of food to eat a meal, I'm hoping it's been made fresh or at least being reheated in the oven/stove. If I didn't notice that it was being microwaved, we would have taken left overs home and remicrowaved it and anyone who knows food safety knows that's a BIG NO NO. If they know they are microwaving items they should not be offering take away. Overall I have been here so many times and my experience has gone down hill with each visit. Now a few more sri Lankan food options have opened up, I will be giving this place.

They also often run out of things that I look forward to eating which are part of...

First the foremost I’d like to thank the Headchef/owner & his wife/owner for the amazing customer service! As soon as we walked in, didn’t even reach halfway and we felt a warm welcome from them, they came to greet us with such kindness & warmth, we felt at home! The food was next level! I have never eaten Crab Curry the way they made it! It was DIVINE! DELICIOUS! MOUTH WATERING, you could tell they use high quality and fresh ingredients.

I have eaten at sooo many Sri Lankan restaurant’s before, even in Melbourne… Lankan Railway is the BEST!! Don’t even think twice about eating here… actually, don’t think at all… just DO IT👌🏼! You will regret it if you don’t!

You’re not left with oily, bitter aftertaste, and definitely no bloating afterwards! We travel from Box Hill 2765; and it is sooo worth it! My #1 go to for my Sri...

🍛 Thilak Rice: The thilak rice was so spicy and tasty, it felt like a disco inferno in my mouth. If you love a kick, this dish will have you dancing and sweating with joy. 🥞 Dosa: The dosa was soft and delicious, unlike the crispy Indian dosa. It’s a comforting, melt-in-your-mouth experience that’s uniquely delightful. 🍽️ Daily Specials: They do daily specials, like Hopper on Saturdays from 5pm onwards. Sadly, we didn't get to try it, but now we have a reason to return. 👨‍🍳 Friendly Chef: The chef here used to work at Longrain in Surry Hills, and it shows in every dish. His friendly demeanor adds a personal touch to the whole experience. 🥳 Overall Experience: Lankan Railway Cafe is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. If you haven’t been here yet, your taste buds are missing out on an adventure!
