Came after the hype and my friend and I didn’t wait long to get a table. Servers were friendly and attentive to us.

My friend said the matcha latte was good and she got one for herself. I got myself a teapot of genmaicha though as it’s not easy to come by a place where they sell nice Japanese tea.

I indulged myself with the genmaicha, which I hadn’t had in a long while. The aroma was nice and the tea was rich. They had an extensive list of teas on their menu which I wanted to try them all another day, definitely matcha the next time I visit again.

My friend got the breakfast plate and I got katsu hamburg steak for sharing, as these were the signatures. I found the breakfast plate pretty average, nothing special about it, but it’s prepared in a healthy way.

I was quite satisfied with katsu hamburg steak as it’s rare to find in other cafes. It’s well cooked and complemented with the Japanese curry sauce, which I couldn’t find fault with. The toast that came with it wasn’t enough to keep us full, hence we had chips as add on.

Overall I enjoyed the dining experience, though the price was on the steep side. The place had got very minimalist decor and it’s relaxing to sit in and enjoy your food and...

I had an unpleasant experience at Maeda this past weekend. Initially, I didn’t mind sitting outside and was placed at the last table under the awning, on the edge. Shortly after ordering, it became windy and started raining, and we could actually feel the rain where we were sitting.

I noticed another table inside had just been vacated, with no reservations and no one sitting there. I kindly asked the female staff (without glasses) if we could move inside due to the weather, but she refused. I could understand if the table was booked or taken, but I saw another couple walk in and get seated there right after.

As we continued eating, the roof started leaking, and we had to move the table ourselves. Throughout the service, the same staff member had a completely straight face, didn’t say a word, and didn’t check on us at all. When we left, there was no greeting or acknowledgment from her. It was honestly one of the worst service experiences I’ve had.

However, I want to acknowledge that the male staff who served our food was really friendly, which is the only redeeming part of the experience. Unfortunately, the overall service left a...

We were seated very quickly when we arrived (+1!). Everything was also delicious (+10!).

It was our first time trying this place out, and the food was delicious, and the serving size was perfect, too.

The ambience was great - so open and bright.

Loved that they offered amazake, a delicious probiotic gut friendly drink that is akin to a lightly sweet porridge with some grated ginger for more warmth.

As for the breakfast plate.... The pickles. The salmon. The shimeji mushrooms. The egg custard square. My GOODNESS. The broccoli was well cooked but didn't add much to the plate, and the prawn pasta was a bit random, so I'm glad there wasn't much of it.

I would happily come back here to try the matcha drinks as well, which looked so beautifully green! Lots of people lining up for takeaway drinks. A good sign 👌 lovely service too.

2 breakfast plates and 2 drinks totalled to about $60. We were satieted and very pleased with our visit to our new favourite...

Weekday lunch at this bright and airy corner cafe in the southern end of Newtown. Busy with constant turnover and the lovely staff efficiently topping up water and clearing tables. Modern Japanese menu with a good selection of coffee and tea options. The matcha lattes hot or cold are standouts as was the delightful Jelly Affogatto. Ramen is only available Tue - Fri and in one type. lots of noodles done medium soft and a light Yokohama style soy broth heavily flavoured by the garlic oil. I miss my pork based tonkotsu broth and chashu with the Maeda version coming with impressively moist chicken chashu floating gently next to a slice of roast tomato. I ordered the add-on of chicken karaage which was the low point of the meal. Six thumb sized pieces that were as dry as the chashu was moist. Don't let this dissuade you from trying Maeda though! The breakfast plate was delicious. Each component expertly done and presented well. We'll be back to try more of the menu.
