We’ve been to Meet Gerard before, a few years back but it had sadly fallen off our radar with all the busy blogging weekends. Passing by recently, I decided to revisit and so glad I did, for it was just as good as I remembered. I then returned the following week.

The cafe, located on Henderson Road in Alexandria is a quaint little spot. It’s casual, perhaps a little rustic and could probably do with some updated menus. Indoor and outdoor seating and you could sit outside with your puppy if you so pleased.

The coffee there is certainly a selling point, for they make their coffee with beans by specialty roasters Coffee Alchemy.

Food wise, they appear to be about sourcing fresh local produce, serving up clean, healthy and delicious meals.

We enjoyed a variety of dishes including the Creamy Chili scrambled eggs, with a touch of spice (not too hot at all), served with grilled broccolini, goats curd and flavoured with sumac. Served on a slice of sourdough. We’d recommend two pieces of toast.

Their sandwiches are such a good lunch choice; at $10, they’re super good value. They list their chicken sandwich as the ‘Best Roast Chicken Sandwich Ever’ and we can see why. Sonoma rustic miche, filled with roast chicken, picnic stuffing, herbed aioli and rocket.

My favourite is their ‘ultimate Salad Sandwich’, again on the softest bread ever, filled with heaps of crunchy vegetables, tomato, alfalfa, beetroot hummus, pickled cucumber, cheddar and aioli. If you’re after a vegan dish, you can simply opt for no aioli or cheese. I enjoyed this so much that I ordered it two weeks in a row.

Our dining party also enjoyed the “Milk & Honey” yoghurt pannacotta, served like a work of art with fresh fruits, honeyed puffed rice and house granola.

On the menu, they also have Cilbir eggs with sujuk, yoghurt, dill, parsley, brussels, fefferoni and toast or a beef burgers, brekkie bowls and smashed avo to name a few.

We hope you enjoy your visit as...

Not a good first experience. Coffee tasted ok but was warm, not hot. (On a chilly damp morning) Went on my own - there were 2 empty tables both had 3 chairs. But I wasn't allowed to sit at the table I chose ('we might seat 4 there") so was put up the back in the dark area. When I left 15 minutes later 2 people were seated at the other table. Gee thanks Gerard. I loathe rock hard crusty dourdough (so did the table next to me clearly as 2 huge piles of inedible crusts remained on their plates when they left). So instead of 'eggs any style' (with afore stated single bread choice) I ordered 'chilli scrambled eggs / broccolini/etc' - which had no stated bread (my fault - I should have asked) which duly arrived with 2 HUGE ugly pieces of that bread. Doh! These I dumped ceremoniously on the saucer of my lukewarm coffee cup's saucer. The scrambled eggs were fine and the broccolini cooked al dente. Go again ? Maybe if it's less crowded and there's other bread options. Give me good old fashioned multigrain...

Really dissapointed after my experience. We came to the cafe specifically because it's menu says it caters to food allergies and it has several gluten free options. When I placed my order I advised I made sure to say I needed my order gluten free. When the food came out the bread was not gluten free and all the topping were built onto the bread. I asked the server to double check and she advised me it was not made gluten free. She said they would bring out a new one. Within 5 minutes they brought out the new plate however all they had done is scraped off the same toppings and placed it on gluten free bread. I told the server I have celiac disease and she said they had made it from scratch again but unfortunately I could see again that in the 5 minutes it was clearly just the same meal as before and I could not risk making myself ill. I paid for a meal I did not eat as I did not want to penalize the chef or the cafe owner but it was a very disappointing experience and I won't...

I’m assuming the coffee here is absolutely amazing, because I definitely wouldn’t just come here for the food. The texture of the chicken in the chicken burger was great and the meat was moist, however there was no actual flavour to the meat/burger. The sauce/slaw was just sour with no other flavour (best way to describe it would be sweet chilli sauce mixed with a lot of lemon juice). The mango smoothie wasnt too bad, was quite refreshing. The hand cut, home made fries were soggy and not crispy at all (I personally think steakhouse fries or any beer battered fry would have been better suited and would have required less work). The cinnamon cruffin was dry and not so moreish….. not very buttery (and that’s considering I have a sweet tooth). Service was fantastic and very welcoming. Cafe was clean, food came out very fast and all menu items were reasonably priced.

Stopping by Sydney for Wicked The Musical later in the afternoon. Couldn't check in yet since I'm too early so instead, Googled cafes in the surrounds, went for a morning stroll and landed at Meet Gerard for breakfast. Quite easy to get to on foot, pass the dog park and on the corner at the end of Gerard Street towards the main road. Great place for groups smaller 3 but am sure bigger groups can be accomodated. Attentive and friendly servers. Playing up beat tunes. I ordered an extra hot hot chocolate and the truffled mushroom on toast. Reasonably priced, majority of the brunch menu items are all under $20. You can definitely taste the subtlety of the truffle oil, it's not overpowering, rather playing its supporting role amongst the balsamic vinegar drizzle.
