I've found my second extended family! The teachers as well as the students, we just bond so well. And it's a place where I can fully own myself and show what's real, opposite to the world around us. On the emotional side: they are very caring about their students, me included. They care about what's going on with the students, so they can help them better! We can always arrange for a private call with our teacher when we are stuck with something or have something personal to share. The same goes for my practice partners I choose from all the students, and we help each other. On the skills side: They give personal feedback in each class to each student, the right amount of information depending on their current skill level! How is that for supporting your accelerated improvement? They are also happy to look at our self-tapes we would send off to auditions and help making it better. They bring in the latest industry trends and train the students to be able to ride those trends. I'm learning the Meisner technique and I do screen classes. Over a year now I've certainly learnt to be comfortable in front of the camera and know how to adjust everything to do my self-tape, learnt to act on cue and be comfortable being uncomfortable :) - something that is a must have trait/skill in this industry. Scary and overwhelming technicalities? They make you a pro. "Stage fright"? - they train you to be a responder. I've learnt something I missed at the beginning, that they are also filmmakers themselves, it was surprising to know. Something very useful for life: they teach us how to read people. How to read cues, how to interpret it without having to think too much, and they teach us how to use and trust our instincts. They are committed to our success. This is also a safe place for making mistakes, and as we do, we get comfortable with it so we can own ourselves and become better week by week. The work load? Depends on how many classes you choose. 1 Meisner plus 1 Screen per week is a great start, some people do more, some do less. From your side: requires commitment to do your work, in class and practice outside of class. Listen and follow prompts. You'll get to do different levels of work depending on your overall progress so you get more and more equipped with knowledge and skills. I'm with a Hungarian background, and we are quite multinational in these classes. I have a lot of fun every time, I love my teachers' sense of humour :) They are hard-working, for us....
Read moreThree words I'd use to describe Actor's Pulse – passion, tempo and connection.
Passion. I was looking for a place in Sydney where I can do my hobby seriously and consistently. I tried different places, like contemporary dance, yoga, improv theatre. It was all fun, but I couldn't stick to it, there were no bond, people were coming and going. What I loved about Actor's Pulse when I just started was the passion and commitment of other students. And the program is built the way that in the same class there are students of different level (of course all beginners, but some just started with you, some did the school for a term, some for five terms), so you can see what you can achieve. I was inspired a lot by other students. I like to be around committed and passionate people, it makes me more committed and passionate myself.
Tempo. I did a couple of different schools when you have like "Level 1", "Level 2" etc. Each level is for example, 2 months. After 2 months it's assumed that you learned what you supposed to learn in Level 1. But in practice every person is different, we all have different knowledge, skill and life experience. For some people it's super easy to be free and confident, for some people it's easy to start crying in front of the others. For me it was easy to be a clown, but harder to be seriously confident or vulnerable. In Actor's Pulse there are Levels, but they're not directly associated with the time you spent in school. You can be stuck in one level for longer or can jump through the other level really quickly – depends on how hard it takes you personally to get and master the particular lesson. The big part of the process is finding yourself and part of it is finding your rhythm, your tempo.
Connection. The last (but for me the most important one) is connection. It's easier to make bonds with people who you see vulnerable on stage. Who are vulnerable and open with you doing the exercise. You don't have to go for drinks to get to know someone. You just see their work, see them being open, see them fail, see them win. And also the main lesson we're trying to learn is to be in the moment, to connect with the partner, to find the deepest truth. The base of everything we’re trying to do in the school is the real connection with the partner and...
Read moreI started my journey with The Actor’s Pulse at thirteen in their New York Style Teen Acting (NYTAC) classes with a dream to act, and I can say with confidence that The Actor’s Pulse has not only provided me with (and continues to provide me with) high quality training, but has shaped me into becoming the person I am today.
As a teen stepping into the performing arts industry, Ruby, Billy, Naji, Tigran, Havas and all for the wonderful tutors at Pulse guided me with certainty and precision through my training and all the hurdles I faced when stepping into the acting world - which I will forever be grateful for. The NYTAC course is one which I often recommend to children and teens wanting to get into acting, as it efficiently provides training in all areas needed in the industry including stage, screen and the Meisner Technique. When I graduated from the NYTAC course last year, I walked away not only feeling equipped to work in the industry as a teen actor, but feeling confident in myself and supported by those around me.
After starting the Beginner Meisner Course this year, I feel more pushed and determined than ever. Billy makes sure that every student at The Actor’s Pulse is given every opportunity to succeed, with assignments and rehearsal spaces set up so that frequent practice and utilisation of our skills as actors is easily accessible. Furthermore, the clear passion and wisdom that all of the tutors at The Actor’s Pulse possess, creates a safe, and welcoming environment where each student is given a quality education that will stay with them for life. There is a reason why The Actor’s Pulse is considered the best acting school in the Southern Hemisphere.
All in all, in my nearly four years at The Actor’s Pulse, this studio has become a second home to me where I’ve made life-long friends, met amazing people and have been given every opportunity to grow, learn and master my craft. I look forward to the many...
