My partner and I had dinner at Pizze Baby two or three times before we moved back from Sydney to London. I think we went at first because a colleague of mine had recommended it; she had seen a sign outside the restaurant that boasted of the best negronis in Sydney. I'd also seen this sign and been sorely tempted, and so we decided to go... and we weren't disappointed. After the first time, we went back again for two more very special meals.
I find it kind of difficult to describe what is so great about this restaurant. The decor is plain, with white washed walls and unfussy dark wood furniture, and a sort of modernist glass and stainless steel bar, all of which combine to bring the best out the natural features of the main dining room. The menu is absolutely great, with a few wonderfully fresh and well balanced salads to choose from (each time with something different on the specials board), and a list of pizza combinations each more delicious than the last, and, with such gems as gorgonzola and grape on a white base (if memory serves correctly), a menu that stretches beyond the usual suspects too. The bases were thin and crispy, and served hot. The toppings didn't slide off in a heap of goo on to the table, as in some other joints, but managed to remain snugly attached to the base of the pizza. The wine list was, again, not overly complicated but impressively robust. I remember a delicious sangiovese by carafe. The negronis were, naturally, always delicious.
I'm afraid I don't have a good head for names but, each time we had dinner here, we had great chats with the waiter/proprietor, and also with their partner who manned the kitchen. The conversation never became too much, even when the restaurant was pretty quiet, but just enough to leave us with an enduring sense of connection with the restaurant.
If someone were to ask me out of the blue 'what is your favourite restaurant?' I might very well say Pizze Baby. Sometimes the most special restaurants doesn't need to be terribly fancy, or situated in the rarest location, or surrounded by the trendiest people. Sometimes it is just about delivering an experience that is just trying to get the basic, honest details exquisitely on point. My partner and I still talk longingly about this place, and compare other restaurants to it - always to Pizze...
Read moreOh my oh my!!! Well what do I say! We were looking for a place to eat pizza amd stumbled upon this place. Initially were not inclined as it was a good 30min drive for us. But boy were we in for a surprise. The entrance is similar to a small corner cafe shop with dimmed lighting so it sort of tricks you. When you go in, with the limited 15-20seating you feel as if its the wrong place to be and then you want to decide a good after dinner place to eat something as you’re sure this will end bad. But then the staff starts chatting with you, explaining the completely different menu they have, or how they have constantly been working on new pizza types. Then the pizza comes and you look at it and think - lets get this done with so we can go eat the McD burger and go home. The first bite and man you are blown away. The feeling of happiness mixed with sorrow of having pre-judged them. What an amazing place this was. We ordered the margarita, then a burnt mushroom one, then a simply veg one, and not even 1 thing was an issue. The taste just blew us away and I would happily drive an hour just to eat to my heart’s content again. Even before I could snatch a few pics all the pizzas were happily devoured. The deserts were equally amazing and those fortunately were the only pics I could take. The cheesecake one is worth killing someone tbh!!! Love you guys and please keep up the good work!!! Definitely coming...
Read moreMy friend and I had dinner here a while ago and waited over an hour to be served our meals. This was unusual as my friend frequented Pizze Baby and always had great experiences there. The day we went the owners took ages to make our food and serve our drinks- as we were waiting, tables who came and ordered after us were all served and some even finished their meals before our food arrived. The young waitress who served us was very apologetic, and we didn't want to make a fuss so we left quietly. However, we have a friend that was working at the restaurant that day (and has quit so I now feel comfortable writing this review) who told us that the laughter we heard in the kitchen, as we were waiting for our food, were the owners making jokes about me and my friend and how they were purposefully holding our food back and making us wait... I don't believe we had done anything to upset them that much, so it was a shock when we found out that they had done so purposefully. This was very unprofessional and the disrespect we experienced from their "fine establishment" was a huge...
