Our experience at Queen Chow was a bit of a letdown for the price we paid and the expectations we had. We visited Queen Chow without a reservation on a Tuesday night where they were unusually busy due to a show at Enmore Theatre. They seemed to be understaffed and unprepared for this amount of business, which may be the cause for our subpar experience.

When we first arrived, there was no one at the front to seat us so we had to venture deep into the restaurant where we were mostly ignored by the staff. Eventually we were told to wait in the foyer and they'd get us when a seat cleared up at the bar. We waited for 20 minutes and were not addressed, so we went up and found another staff member who seated us at the bar. We were then ignored by person working the bar for another 10-15 minutes.

When we were finally seated at a table, we had to wait another 15-20 minutes before our order was taken and the food took a long time to arrive. We ordered the prawn toast, wonton soup and beef tartare for starters, and the crispy skin chicken and char kway teow for the main. The prawn toast was the highlight of the night and we would highly recommend. However, we only received our soup after the mains came out, which was supposed to be a starter. The rest of the food was quite underwhelming. The char kway teow was very disappointing, consisting mostly of onions. The chicken was very plain and too salty and did not come with the charred leeks.

I must say that the staff were absolutely lovely when they interacted with us, but we felt largely neglected and ignored throughout the night. I understand that they were particularly busy that night and there may have been a staffing issue but overall we did not have a...

A bit confusing to find the place since it was located above a bar but got there in the end. Pretty nice outdoor atmosphere with succulent decor. The interior was quite nice too with Asian inspired wallpaper. Staff were really accomodating with decent knowledge of the menu. Starting off with the steamed scallops. Very tender and silky, paired with the right condiments and plenty of coriander. Moving on to the Peking duck. Quite standard. Just wish the skin was a bit more crispy. The meat was a bit tough and chewing too. Onto the lobster noodles as the main. The waiter recommended this dish and said it was really popular so we decided to give it a go…wasn’t great. The noodles were like the ones that you get in packeted instant noodles and there were very limited pieces of lobster meat in the dish. The bits of meat that were in there were very tough to the point where it felt like it was over cooked…the rest of the meat were in the lobster and had to break each leg with our hands to get to the meat. Quite disappointing as it kind of ruined the fine dining experience. Finally onto desserts, got the fried ice cream, pandan pudding and crème brûlée the fried ice cream was quite standard as the ones you would get in other Asian restaurants but the thing that made it stand out was the butterscotch sauce!! The pandan pudding was nice but it was lacking some texture since the cake was extremely soft as it was soaked in liquid, and hence the whipped cream wasn’t the perfect match. The crème brûlée tart was the best dessert we got but just wish the portion size was a bit bigger since the tart was really thin. Overall it was a decent experience and might consider coming back in...

Both my family & I are frequent customers to Queen Chow so this really peeves me to write this review with absolute transparency as there was no excuse for the lobster 🦞 served to me today. On a quiet Saturday afternoon I was received with a warm welcome from the staff & served a fine chilli margarita. My entree of choice was courgette flowers with an Asian twist. Nothing wrong with it just ordinary. Followed by another Mezcal cocktail, again divine. I then had half a lobster w mushrooms in garlic butter. No, I don’t scrimp as I’m a chef/event caterer & appreciate good food & have always had excellent cuisine from Dan Hong & his team. Today however, with very few clientele I was served a barely Luke warm dish bordering on cold. I hesitated to send it back but I was so disappointed & the waitress had no hesitation at my request. I was then presented with my freshly caught & served re-heated overcooked 🦞. This dish should have been discarded & chef should have taken accountability for a dish going out substandard but no, it was re-heated and chewy. On paying the bill of over $220 @ no time did the waitress apologise let alone offer a discount. I had to convey my disappointment of which she said she would tell the kitchen staff. I would say we have been regular customers frequenting Queen Chow at least every other month. If my kitchen sent out food of this nature I would be appalled. Dan Hong sort your kitchen out. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants not under the Merivale banner that do better. It’ll take a lot for...

Overall it was a decent experience. The food is quite overpriced for Chinese food. Firstly if you have large groups you are forced to get a banquet, which is generally okay but one of the dishes served is a tray of steamed dumplings. The issue is there are 4 different types of dumplings but they only serve enough where you can only try 2. (Overall though the taste of the dumplings are quite good, well balanced flavours). The entrees of salt and pepper squid and cucumber salad were all good and at that point I thought maybe it is worth the price. Then came the mains.... the fried rice was relatively standard and the parrot fish fillet was very disappointing... it was actually quite dry.. I would say probably overcooked. The snake bean stir fry witg cuttlefish was not bad. Later we got sweet and sour pork which was disappointing; lacking in flavour, probably due to the size of each piece. The steam greens... which were rather bitter, probably cause the greens were a bit old. The dessert was very average too... it came as large deep fired ice cream... which looked impressive... but the ice cream itself was bland which is disappointing... it was also a tad in the ice'r side instead of being creamy. Overall I would not recommend the banquet. If anything for a la carte and focus on the entrees.

Queen Chow Enmore absolutely delivers on flavour, atmosphere, and service. Every dish we tried was perfectly executed and full of personality. We started with the prawn toast with chilli mayo – golden, crunchy, and generously topped, with just the right kick of spice. The chicken and potato spring rolls were a surprise hit – crisp on the outside, soft and comforting inside, like the best version of a classic. The burrata with Chinkiang vinegar, crispy chilli, and Chinese fried bread was honestly life-changing — a mix of creamy, tangy, and crunchy that worked in the most unexpected way. Huge shout-out to our waiter for recommending it — absolute legend! 🙌 The salt ‘n’ pepper squid was spot-on: tender, lightly battered, and bursting with flavour. To finish, the Singapore noodles tied everything together – a perfect balance of curry, char siu, prawns, and egg that felt both nostalgic and elevated. The staff were incredibly attentive and helpful, striking that rare balance between being friendly and genuinely professional. It’s clear that everyone here takes pride in the experience they deliver. Queen Chow Enmore is one of those places where every dish feels thoughtful and every detail is done right. Highly recommend for anyone who loves modern Chinese with a creative twist.
