How do we score this place? We went to experience the coffee and food, which was on point. My partner had the avo on rye while i had the broken omelette roll. We both enjoyed these immensely. Our coffees were delicious. We've both heard a lot about the coffee here, and we were not disappointed, however, this is where things started to fall apart... Asking about the various coffees on order and getting an understanding about them as someone who is a not a seasoned hipster coffee connoisseur... This leads us to service.

It was clear from the moment we arrived, we were not the type of people the waitress would make friends with and were treated to a chilly reception. She was the type of person who only likes you if you're a 7 foot bag of muscles with a stupid haircut who pays no attention to her or her advances, read: a douchebag. From the way she interacted with others, it was clear she was either the manager or assistant manager or something like that.

It was not too busy when we arrived, so sat down at a table, but then thought we should double check with the wait staff to make sure we had not taken a reserved table or something like that. On asking, her response was an annoyed, "just sit down." From here, anytime she interacted with us, it was clear she had no time for us and regarded our questions as though they were dumb. She became visibly annoyed with my partner who did take some extra time ordering. As she was breastfeeding at the time, there were many foods and substances she was forced to avoid, so was asking what was in a certain drink, or if there was tomato in the meal. The waitress walked away at many times while we were trying to establish our order, as it was clear her time was so important and we were wasting it.

Look, we get it alright? Both of us have done our time in customer service. It sucks. People are stupid. However, if you have a happy demeanour and treat others well, your day is more enjoyable and you'll get to have those nice interactions with good people. This person obviously loathes her job though, so even when we thought we were trying to be super polite and friendly during her rude interactions, we were unable to get an ounce of decent customer service or get her to open up and show any civility.

To sum this up: Come here for the coffee and food. it is stellar. But if you're unfortunate enough to come by on a day when the wait staff are in a bad mood or decide they don't like you, be prepared for Telstra call centre levels of terrible...

Went here for breakfast the other day and honestly my experience was very odd. I’ve been coming to Reuben Hills since 2018 as it was my favourite cafe until my most recent experience.

I was initially saddened to seerye was what I came to RH for so often. I understand the change from Rye to AP Sourdough as a business decision given the links between the two cafes, however the switch from chickpea/pickled onions/dill/herb oil to inferior ingredients was disappointing however I gave it a go and was not impressed, the herb crackers were particularly bad.

I understand that my personal preference is just that, and normally I wouldn’t leave a bad review over a menu change I disagree with, but that wasn’t the worst part of my experience. I also ordered a malteaser milkshake that I saw the staff drinking in front of me, which particularly appalled me.

From where I was sitting I could see the milkshake being made, specifically in a tall silver milkshake glass. I then saw the staff member who made it pour out a glass worth of milkshake into a water glass and set it aside. I was then served that milkshake. A few minutes later the staff member who made the milkshake handed the extra glass to a different worker who drank it in front of me. I was honestly quite offended that neither of them had the brains or awareness to reduce/consume my $10 milkshake ANYWHERE other than right in front of me… like come on…

My girlfriend also got the mushroom burrito that was way overpriced for what it was. Another menu change that has been for the worse, a definite downgrade from the previous breakfast burrito. At least with the breakfast burrito they used to cut it half and serve it in something slightly nicer than tinfoil.

The menu changes were disappointing (they are also not reflected on the website which still has the old menu) but I’ve been a loyal customer for around four years and was prepared to still come back, but the whole thing with the milkshake left a sour taste in my mouth.

Whatever changes have happened in the last few months since I was last there, staff and menu, have been for the worse...

Let me just state that my review has nothing to do with the food but more the way we were treated when we visited with our puppy. We waited in line for a table and told them specifically we needed to be seated with our dog. Eventually after a lengthy wait (which we are ok with as we didn't mind waiting for a dog friendly table) we got directed to the table out the back right next to their roller door. Our pup was well behaved and quickly fell asleep under the table at our feet out of everyone's way.. About 3/4 of our way through the meal a random waitress walked by and spotted him sitting there and says quiet rudely to my partner "mate, you can't have your dog in here, people are eating you have to tie him up outside." We were obviously surprised as one, we had waited for a dog friendly seat had we not? And two, at her ridiculously rude attitude. So my partner left the rest of his food to go tie our pup by a pipe near the door and sat with him as he would have only been a few months old at the time he would have gotten quite stressed if we left him alone. The waitress came round again and saw my partner sitting with my pup on the floor and goes "can't you just leave him there!?" my partner goes on to explain that he couldn't as he would cry and disturb other people. We would have been fine to go elsewhere if told up front that they weren't pet friendly instead of getting mixed messages from different people and made to feel like we did the wrong thing! What terrible customer interaction!! I will never go back based on this experience and advise anyone else hoping to take their dog with them to...

We've been to Reuben Hills plenty of times and always thoroughly enjoy it for a quality cup of coffee and unique menu. Reuben Hills is a micro roastery with a street front cafe. They sell products in store as well as wholesale. It's a trendy little space with exposed bring walls, dim lighting and friendly and approachable hipster staff. During these Covid19 times, they're doing an all day menu for eat in (max 10 diners) and takeaway. Their menu is interesting and has a unique take on your favourites, with a South American twist, and the all day dining options are varied. On previous visits, we also liked the huevos divorciados and baked eggs. Today, we enjoyed the polenta porridge cooked in almond and macadamia milk, topped with rhubarb and granola. This makes it a vegan, vegetarian and dairy free meal. The polenta gives it an interesting texture and the toppings flavour it nicely. Reasonably priced at $12. Kurt loved the BROKEN OMELETTE ROLL with fried shrimp, omelette and bacon jam on a milk bun with rocket and a side of prawn crackers. The coffee is always good, whether it be a milk based, filter, espresso or cold brew. They also do tea, chai, sodas and shakes (why not try their oreo or salted caramel shake). It's probably a good time to pay them a visit whilst it's a bit quieter than usual or even grab yourself takeaway. Also selling pantry staples if you're in need of anything

Finally had a chance to try this on New Years Day 1/1/2018! Waited a little under half an hour but probably due to being one of the only places open on that day. Coffee was alright, we ordered takeaway coffee while we waited for our seats. The cappuccino was a little too milky but the latte was fine. Food came to our tables quick service was good and the food was really good but also depends on your taste. The “not so Reuben” sandwich was amazing! A few slices of wagyu and some cabbage slaw gave it a crunchy bite then you taste the wagyu just completely melting in you mouth.... wonderful experience! The omelette sandwich looked interesting, and tasted good, but the prawn crackers on the side confused me 🤷‍♂️. Finally the fried chicken with a side of pickled chillies was really yummy. The lightly seasoned fried chicken didn’t taste oily at all and the chillies accompanied it giving a nice kick to the dish. The tortilla was soft and chewy which is nice depending on your taste again. My friend got the Rhubarb Soda which was nice and my girlfriend on the other hand got this lemony citrus drink! It was sour and it was awesome! All in all a good first experience, will definitely return for the wagyu beef sandwich again!

As Confucius once said; do not be foolish to order coffee in a tea house. The opposite also, applies. Do not order matcha in a coffee roastery and expect to be satisfied. That was my only mistake. The matcha latte was very bland and clumpy. My peers were sensible and ordered coffee and enjoyed it. I had a sip of the cold brew and found it delicious. This cafe interestingly discloses the cost of their coffee beans. Anyone who puts that effort into ethical sourcing and transparency, deserves their flowers. I’d happily spend my weekly coffee fund on a drink here. Their unique menu is what enticed us, with a mix of food suitable for breakfast and lunch. The brekkie burrito was delicious and filling, with the perfect level of spice from the hot sauce. The grilled prawn hoagie wasn’t too heavy and refreshing from the daikon pickle. I also had a nibble of my friend’s coconut rice pudding and it was a textural delight. I’ll be ordering that the next time I return and I’m not even usually a sweet breakfast person. Overall, a solid cafe to return to. It’s a neighbourhood cafe nestled amongst terrace houses. The interior is industrial yet feels warm and the service matched.
