We have been coming to this restaurant regularly for lunch with a group of moms and our children. On a recent day, the restaurant was almost empty, and as always, we made a conscious effort to keep our kids calm and respectful. We constantly reminded them not to be loud, not to run, and to behave appropriately—so we could all enjoy our lunch without causing any disruptions.
Despite our efforts, a staff member approached us in an extremely rude and condescending manner. She complained about the noise, the kids moving around, and how it could disturb other customers—even though there were barely any other customers at the time. She also mentioned that their behavior could lead to an accident, although none of the children were climbing on furniture, jumping on chairs, or doing anything dangerous. They were simply being kids—walking, talking, sometimes running, as children do.
She went on to say that every time we come, the manager receives complaints about the "bad atmosphere" we supposedly create. We explained that while we absolutely take responsibility for maintaining order, we can't tie our children to chairs or expect them to be silent. We don’t believe the solution is to hand them screens just to keep them still, which seems to be what some people expect these days.
We reminded her that these are children, and while we do our best to keep them in check, we cannot expect them to be perfectly silent or restrained like adults. We suggested that if the restaurant prefers children to be glued to screens just to keep them quiet, that’s a reflection of a society lacking patience, empathy, and understanding of healthy childhood behavior.
Children will cry, shout, run, walk around —that’s normal. It’s unfair to judge our parenting or label the natural energy of happy kids as a disturbance. That’s part of growing up.
