Recently went to Sake for a birthday dinner. There were 10 of us so we had a private room and the set menu which is $88pp (you can't go ala carte if you have a group) - we had prebooked and paid a deposit. Our booking was for 8.30pm - which in many parts of Sydney would mean it was starting to get quiet - but was packed at Sake.

The food was lovely so if I was just rating that, it would get a really high rating - really enjoyed the wagyu beef and the popcorn shrimp. Wine selection was also good. The order that the food was served in was a little bit odd - the miso came at the end, about 15-20minutes after we'd finished everything else. We asked about that and were told that miso was served at the end in Japan - might be worth the restaurants while explaining that to customers who aren't used to that earlier, it would have been a nice service touch to have someone explain the menu and order at the start.

The reason for only rating Sake "Ok" is the service. Sake clearly hadn't staffed enough for the volume of people they had - really the 3 private rooms should have the waitress just dedicated to them rather than trying to manage the broader dining room as well as ours was. For example, when we asked for 2 beers, we had to reiterate the request on 2 more occasions before it finally arrived about 20 minutes after originally requested - we also had to chase for further drinks. We also had to request the bill several times before it arrived. For a group, a service charge is a required payment from the restaurant and automatically listed on your bill - we did end up disputing this and the restaurant did remove the charge without much question - it was interesting that afterwards we read writeups in the Good Food Guide and it even mentioned in there that service was poor unless you have "Japanese Elvis" - so there is a published book referencing issues with service but Sake still is having problems...

The food is great and some of the best sushi I’ve had. However, the service and attention is on the a scale of a 1 or a 2 especially being that the prices are on the high side. You would expect to get much better service. We walked in and the host asked if we had a reservation. I asked if one was required and he said they were super busy even though I saw about 10 or so table available. He asked if we wanted to sit at the sushi bar or a very skinny high top (the table diameter was about size of the server’s tray). We chose the high top. We waited 15 minutes for someone’s acknowledge us. We finally got water and the gentleman (servers) asked if we were okay with table. I jokingly said only if we have to eat one thing at a time since the table was so small. He actually got us a small table in a corner despite the host saying we couldn’t get a table and I think the server got in trouble for doing so. Nevertheless, we got a table and waited another 20 minutes or so to get attention. The new server was was a bit aloof and she wasn’t too helpful with the menu. They are known for sake so asked for unfiltered sake or a recommendation. She left to ask and came back to say they didn’t have unfiltered sake and just left it at that -no recommendations. The host took over serving us but he was a bit rushed to take our order. We sat ate/drank for another hour and the restaurant never filled up or even half full. Again, good food but the service...

We arrived and were warmly welcomed and seated. The service was attentive although with a certain amount of unhumorous tolerance. They were out of the toothfish and I'd been looking forward to it all day. We finally settled for the Chefs omakase set menu. Six courses. I took notes so here are my impressions........ Kingfish usuzukuri: The fish seemed to be sliced inconsistently in thickness which led to balanced flavour for some pieces and others not. Tuna tofu ceviche: The tuna was way too cold, hence the dressing overpowered the dish completely and I wouldn't have even know I was eating tuna if it wasn't written on the menu. Roasted scallop: Yum, very tasty well cooked great balance. Lobster tail tempura: Needed a little more seasoning to offset the sweetness of the dipping sauce, so I used a dab of soy and that did the trick. Really tail bits and pieces. Some as small as the end of a finger. Tajima striploin: By far the best dish, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, fantastic balance. Selection of ice creams: Nice flavours, good finish. Wish they would have dropped in a scoop here and there of the yuzu sorbet as a palete cleanser. It's pricy for what you get. We had a discount of 50% so found the value to be fair based on that.

When a Japanese restaurant served you your miso soup as the first dish with a Chinese soup spoon and before other cold dishes, I think one should lower their expectation of the service and food. To be honest, the Japanese food with a western and Chinese flare it’s mediocre but with some surprises. But I really couldn’t get around to their the servicing order. Hot and cold dishes all mixed up, seemed like they come from different part of the kitchen and don’t have a cohesive effort. To make it worse, they suddenly stopped serving for 20 min and when we asked 2 separate staffs to follow up on the orders, none of them come back to us on what have happened. Not until we make a complaint and they explained their docket printer was broken down and properly missed our order. By that time, it was already 8:10, good 40 min since our last dish was served. And none of them offered any solution or estimate time for the missing dishes to come. We have already lost our appetite and becoming restless. So we have to called it a night and have half of a half decent meal. The manager did apologised when I let her know what have happened and try to make amend but it was just too late.

1-Uncomfortable sitting- the table was shared with other couple , and there is the wooden table leg against my leg, unless you move to the edge or too close to the other couple , the restaurant is accommodating more guests than it’s ideal capacity while charging a fine dining price $300+/2 2-Confusion around the menu, it was not clear at time of booking as the way the menu was formatted, the wait staffs at first confirmed it was 16 dishes all shared between the couple, later another wait staff said it is 5 dishes has 16 ingredients in them as we start wondering when unexpected dishes arrives 3-long gap between most of dishes even we ask for faster service, we find it too uncomfortable that we wish to leave sooner 4-Music were too loud, much like a night club, this one is a subjective thought, but when a call came though, I can barely hear it
