Service: HORRENDOUS!!! I won't EVER come here again!! I came with a mate and sat down at a table for dinner. As we sat down, the waitress came and threw us the menu and walked away. No greetings, no smiles. Simply threw the menu onto the table and walked away. We had a look through the menu, great value, lots to choose from which was good. We eventually ordered a Pan Fried Pork Bun with Shallots, the waitress had a rather demeaning tone when we placed our order because we only choose one item. We were given the utensils to use and I noticed that in the bowl i had, there was rice stuck on the spoon! It was old dried up rice, meaning it may not have been washed properly from previous customers having used it. As we waited for our food to come, my mate witnessed the same waitress who threw us the menu sneeze into her own hands and touch a bowl with her hands without washing it! She then gave the bowl she touched to another customer! At the end of dinner, I went up to pay for the dish and the cashier (same person who took the order) just stood there to collect my money. Didn't even tell me the amount that I had to pay. Simply stood there waiting for me to hand her the money. I even asked her "It's $9.80 right?" but I got no response. I gave her the correct amount and she counted the money, it went straight into the cash register and that was it. Never got an answer whether I gave her the correct amount, whether the dish was $9.80 or any response. No nod, no answer, no nothing! She just simply stared at me after putting the money in the register. I just wanted to get out of here as soon as possible! Terrible Terrible experience. Food: Pan Fried Pork Buns, it was okay. The pork buns came out very hot, which was a good thing because then they don't go cold too easily. The soup from the bun tasted quite odd, it tasted as if something was rotten. The soup was too oily and there wasn't much soup in the bun to balance out all of the meat and pastry. Meat overpowered by ginger, was not lean and had a choppy texture. Pastry was thin, quite good, enjoyed it quite a bit because when there was pastry left over it wasn't too overwhelming. The pan fried part of the bun was not so good, wasn't crispy and crunchy enough. I also noticed that they used "old" oil to fried the buns because when I picked up one of the buns, there were fragments of previously cooked food on the bun. You can see it on the top left corner on one of the buns in the picture. Recommendation: DON'T COME HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT HYGIENE. I don't know how they get a four star rating for...
Read moreAshfield's quite a famous spot for Shanghainese restaurants, particularly those that specialise in hand-made dumplings. There's a notorious line up of three neighbouring restaurants with a very similar name (Shanghai Night, New Shanghai, and New Shanghai Night) 🤣. How they came to be next to each other, how they came to have such similar names, and whether there's beef between them? I don't know. But shameless plug - we checked out all three restaurants last year for the 'Best Dumplings in Ashfield' video on my You Tube channel and this one turned out to be my overall favourite! It's one of those homey, friendly, family owned restaurants with minimal decoration. You know the ones. Husband and wife both working, and the child rocking up after school to sit at a table in the corner LOL. But one thing's for sure - the dumplings are delicious! Simple but done well, and very well-priced too. Ever since our first visit, I've always gotten the pan-fried pork dumplings, the pork xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and the steamed pork and chive dumplings. The pork and chive filling is the stand-out for me everytime. I'd think you can get it pan-fried too. One thing I love about Shanghai Night in particular is the dumpling skin. Not too thin, not too thick. Just enough to make sure the dumpling doesn't break apart when picking it up. Really, the perfect bite. They also have this light and slightly spicy pre-made soy vinegar sauce if you ask for it! If you've been to Ashfield before and know of these three restaurants, which is your favourite? 🙂 📍Shanghai...
Read moreAs a regular customer, I recently dined at this restaurant on a Sunday evening, specifically on June 18th, with my girlfriend. We ordered the Chive Pancake, Pan-fried Pork Buns, Signature Shanghainese Handmade Noodles, and a can of Coke, looking forward to a satisfying meal.
However, my experience took an unfortunate turn during the payment process at the counter. The male owner, who was manually calculating the bill on his calculator, ended up charging me $57.60. The bustling atmosphere of the restaurant and the fact that I didn't have my phone with me to show the transaction records from my mobile banking app prevented me from disputing the bill on the spot. He not give me a receipt either.
Upon reviewing the details at home, I realized that the amount charged exceeded my expectations. I checked their menu and the total should have not exceeded more than $42. I was disappointed by the overcharge. It is my sincere hope that the owner, upon reading this review, will take responsibility for their mistake and demonstrate integrity by promptly refunding the overcharged amount. I have the necessary transaction records to support my claim.
While this incident has left a negative impression, it is important to note that everyone can make mistakes. As a customer, I believe in giving honest feedback and providing an opportunity for the owner to make things right. I hope this situation serves as a reminder for the restaurant to improve their billing accuracy and ensure a more satisfactory experience for...
