Kujira in English translates to whale. As you enter the restaurant you will notice a huge whale in a sea of cherry blossom decor on the ceiling. The interior feels and sounds as though you’re in Japan, until the waiters start speaking to you in Cantonese, then you start to think whether Kujira is authentic Japanese cuisine. The food can be ordered via QR code, however there’s no images on online, so you need to refer back to the menu book and number so you know what to order. The menu has a huge variety of dishes which make it hard to choose, but Kujira offers: - sushi a la carte - entree - steam buns - tempura - rolls - meal sets - donburi - poke don - Ochazuke - Yaki curry meal - ramen - udon - soba - hiyashi chuka (cold noodle) All the dishes are presented beautifully with love and passion. Some dishes are rare which you won’t find at other Japanese restaurants. I wish Kujira offered all you can eat, so you could try all the dishes (hopefully this becomes an option in the future). The food tastes great, offers generous portions and priced reasonably. Even though we didn’t try a lot but definitely we will go again and try more in the near future.

I dropped in on the 3rd of January at around 7.30 pm for dinner. It was my 46th birthday. I was treating myself to one of my all time favourite cuisines, Japanese! I remember fondly that I would have Japanese for my birthday because, it is in the middle of summer in Sydney, and I don't really have an appetite for anything else! When I think of hot weather, I think of cool sashimi, seaweed salad and prawn tempura... Tonight was no exception. I went all out, ordering 6 small dishes that came out in just under 20 minutes of ordering. Sashimi of salmon and kingfish, seaweed tofu salad, pork gyōza, fried squid, prawn tempura and seared scallop. Everything was slowly gorged down and enjoyed thoroughly. Across the singles bench was a girl who was dining alone like me, ordered a seafood ramen spaghetti and hand roll. It looked pretty good from what I could see... Finishing almost everything that was in front of me was a remarkable achievement. I left 6 small pieces of fried squid before throwing in the towel. This place might just be my regular on the way home for Japanese. The bill totalled under $64, the reverse of my age!

28/6/24 - 3 stars Found this place incidentally whilst browsing the area and thought, based on the reviews, it would be worth a visit. As described in other reviews, the decor and ambience is quite nice with the prominent whale and sakura branch. Service is fairly rudimentary with self-service for most aspects. Overall, this is a pretty solid local option given the value for money, but, I probably wouldn't come back if I'm looking for Japanese given the innumerable other options that are overall better. Tako-age (fried octopus) Flavour: A, 7/10. Some octopus flavours but the amount of batter and accompanying oil was not great Texture: A, 7/10. Crispy but again, too much batter Value: B, 6/10. $16 Abura Mazesoba Flavour: S, 8/10. Actually quite good with a decent chilli kick though a bit on the salty side Texture: A+, 7.5/10. Good complexity of textures with the soft soba and various vegetables/seaweed but didn't really mesh well. Ended up almost eating them separately. Value: A+, 7.5/10. $19.5 Black Garlic Tonkotsu: A, 7/10. Quite average. Everything quite ordinary and not noteworthy. Value: A+, 7.5/10. $18.5

Very disappointing yet angry experience dining at this restaurant.

We arrived at 7:00pm on a Wednesday night, there were at least 4 ladies working in the open kitchen and there were only 10 diners in the restaurant due to government restrictions, we assume that the staffs were not overloaded by dine-in orders. We ordered some simple food at 7:02pm, then we were left at the corner. Waited until 7:50 but food was still not served. Asked the waitress and got the reply that “I’ll check with the kitchen “ and no further replies.

Throughout the 50 minutes, at least 8 or more uber eat drivers picked up their orders and left. The menu is quite simple with not lots of options and we didn’t order any complicated dishes at all. Obviously the restaurant prioritised their online orders, at the cost of letting their dine-in customers keep waiting. I can understand that there are busy times, but 50minutes waiting after food was ordered is ridiculous. If you guys are buried with online orders, you should have warn us about the long wait before we sit down. If those online orders came in after we placed orders, you should be fair and process our order first.

After we decided not to wait any further (circa 8pm) , I walked to the counter and they suddenly said one of our dishes was now ready. While I was still quite unsure and thinking if we should stay and continue the wait, the lady holding the food said “it’s ok, you can leave, I will throw it away”. I can’t believe she can be this rude. After your customer waited for 50 minutes, instead of apologise, they gave me a humiliating response. Definitely will not visit again and do not recommend this...

Went in with high hopes due to reviews- left with salt in my mouth, disappointed and disgusted.

Staff was unfriendly and unhelpful, their menu was outdated but still had unavailable dishes listed. Called one of the girl staff over to clarify and she immediately pointed at QR menu without listening to what we had to ask. She had to go call the boss over to tell us it’s not offered anymore.

Ordered the salmon poke and it was probably the worst poke I’ve ever had. Salmon was not fresh- it was slimy, not firm, had no flavour and probably marinated in soy sauce for too long. Avocado was also mush. Each spoonful of this dish felt like eating just very salty furikake (seaweed seasoning), slime and rice. The only praise I can give is the presentation and its larger serving size- which was probably not a good thing since it tasted so bad. 2/5

The clam ramen was slightly better, it had fragrant butter broth and sufficient portion of claims, but even the ramen was overcooked and on the softer end. 4/5

While eating, I saw a massive cockroach run across the floor… I immediately lost my appetite. The staff sweeping the floor was clearly aware of the cockroach too but did nothing about it.

Today was also a 32 degree day, and they waited until the tables were 90% filled with sticky customers before turning on their aircon in the dim and stuffy space.

Would give the atmosphere 1/5 if not for the aesthetic decor and nice jpop playlist.

Overall a very unpleasant experience for me personally, and mediocre at best. Their ramen probably has potential, but given the poor service and the cockroaches- I’d think twice before...

I recently visited Kujira for lunch, hoping for a good experience, but unfortunately, it was quite disappointing. From the start, we were greeted and assigned to a newly wiped table that was still wet and not properly cleaned. As first-timers, we were unsure how everything worked, and the lack of guidance didn't help.

We waited for 15 minutes for a waiter to bring us menus, only to see people who arrived after us being served first. Eventually, I told my partner to grab the menus from the counter. Despite making eye contact with the waiter, he continued to attend to other tasks and tables. When we finally waved him over to order, he seemed annoyed, quickly handed us a QR code to order from, and walked away.

The staff were neither friendly nor helpful. When our food was delivered, it was placed on the table quite loudly, as if the waiter was upset. While the food was served quickly, they brought out the sashimi and ramen at the same time. This was frustrating because sashimi should be eaten before hot foods, and by the time we finished the sashimi, the ramen was cold.

The food itself was very average. The sashimi had thick cuts, which is a plus, but it was evident that the fish wasn't of high quality. My partner even remarked that he never thought sashimi could be bad until now. The ramen was okay but not as good as other places we've tried, and the kimchi katsu don was not to our liking. The only dish we enjoyed was the taro karaage due to its crunchiness.

Overall, we won't be coming back. The service was poor, and the food didn't make up for it. This place is not special and definitely not worth a...
