I have always been a fan of this restaurant, but I haven't eaten there since my boss moved to the city. I went to the botany store the day before and found that the taste was slightly different, so I decided to go to the city store the next day to satisfy my craving. I've been there when it was still Madame Shanghai. I really like its Chinese-style decoration and the tableware is also very beautiful. It feels very suitable for colleagues' gatherings or company gatherings. Recommended dishes: 1⃣️ Example soup: Cuttlefish stewed with pork ribs Oh my god, the first sip tastes exactly like the soup my mom used to make when I was a child. The soup is rich but not greasy, and the ribs are fat but not greasy. It is really great! 2⃣️ Braised pork Their braised pork has always been one of my favorites! But nowadays, braised pork does not contain fried tofu, and the meat pieces have become bigger. The pork belly has five layers with distinct layers. It melts in your mouth when you bite it and is full of flavor! Great love! 3⃣️Spicy beef tripe Sorry, it’s one of my favorites too! The boss lady improved it by changing the white beef tripe into braised beef tripe, which makes it more flavorful when fried. It still has the same flavor! 4⃣️ Pork belly wrapped in meat To be honest, I haven't eaten this dish in Changsha. As an appetizer, it's really good. The combination of pork belly and meat is perfect. 5⃣️ Stir-fried pork with peas I love to eat their smoked bamboo shoots, bacon with dried radish, fried pork with turnips, and all the dry rice dishes. They are no different from the ones my grandma used to dry in Changsha! 6⃣️ Steamed preserved meat I have been eating his bacon for many years. I have also bought it from other places but I always felt that the taste was lacking. The bacon was a little salty, but the bacon...
Read moreHahaha, found you back, like a long lost friend. Put 5 stars for my reminiscence before I am going for lunch today. Used to be my favourite restaurant since it opened at the original location opposite to UNSW, 2010? Glad to see those fresh reviews with high rate, and glad to see the happy boss couple. will go to visit Mrs. Ding soon after. Also, you are not allowed to close for a whole month for holiday like before ;) hope the boss couple both have a prosperous business:)
Next day, updating post revisit:
Tasty and delicious, still; Price, medium high, ordered excess because long time no see, fairly match the quality, the location and presentation.
Health, dishes are surprisingly not as oily as traditional way, but still authentic and tasty.
Steamed pork belly with preserved veg, tasty, not salty and oily, good quality meat, double or triple cooked, grease are gone magically.
Preserved pork stir fried with smoked bamboo shoots: the pork is thinly cut like paper, tasty, not salty; lean, but the fat even more tasty, believe the pork is double cooked, had been steamed before stir fry, no grease too.
Preserved pork and sausage, can be cut thinner, otherwise shall be steamed longer.
One dish take way, dried tofu stir fried with preserved pork. The photo shows no white grease when just moved out from fridge and box, impressive.
One soy sauce fried rice was shared by four, also impressive.
after such a big big lunch, skipped dinner, happily found half a kilo lost on...
Read moreFinally got to try this place after getting a number of recommendations to go here.
Food The food we ordered was pretty delicious. The Chairman Mao Braised Pork was nicely cooked and despite sitting in a bowl of oil didn’t taste too oily. The pork had a nice caramelised soya sauce flavour.
Straw mushrooms and celery were nice and has a very fragrant ginger flavour.
Pre-baked small fish and shrimp was probably the most disappointing dish of the night. Not because it wasn’t delicious but just cause of what we expected to get. What we got was these tiny dry fish stir fried with shrimps in chilies. Word of warning, this dish is still quite spicy even though we asked for medium.
The Hunan fried rice was delicious but I couldn’t really tell what made made it Hunan style.
They also give you a nice pickled cabbage appetiser.
Ambience I like the orange coloured walls and pop art around the restaurant.
Service Service was very good and attentive. The waitresses were almost too eager to help out.
Price Three people for dinner including BYOW charge and 1% credit card surcharge came out to around $100 so pretty standard night out in Sydney.
Overall Really liked this place and would...
