The Counter in Petersham is one of those rare local gems that nails everything — from atmosphere to execution. It has a welcoming, homey vibe that immediately makes you feel like a regular, even if it’s your first visit. The team here is genuinely warm and attentive, striking the perfect balance between friendly and professional. You can tell they love what they do, and that energy translates into everything they serve. The sandwiches? Top tier. Thoughtfully crafted with fresh, quality ingredients and bold, balanced flavors. Whether you’re in the mood for something classic or something with a twist, you’ll walk away satisfied. The coffee is equally impressive — consistently smooth, strong, and clearly made with care. It’s rare to find a place where everything feels this dialed in. The Counter isn’t just a café — it’s a community staple, and absolutely worth a visit (or ten).

Ordered The Cuban and was so very disappointed. Actually that is an understatement. The beef was so dry and this is basically a three meat and cheese toastie. It did not look or taste as described whatsoever. I thought they forgot the much needed pickles but I eventually discovered two measly pieces. Do not bother with the $5 hashbrown and pickles. The hashbrown was like a dry piece of leather - how can you screw up a frozen hashbrown so badly. $24 went straight in the bin. Nothing was palatable. Appalling!

The Counter honestly felt like home. As soon as I walked in, the atmosphere was warm, inviting, and relaxed. The staff were incredibly friendly and genuine like catching up with old mates. Coffee was perfect (smooth and strong), and the food came out quick, fresh, and full of flavour. You can tell there’s care in everything they do, from the service to the details on the plate. Such a wholesome spot in Petersham, the cafe is supposed to be there. I’ll be back

Ordered via uber eats and was pointedly (suspiciously) not given any option by uber to review the restaurant after my order so I've come here to make one since my experience is absolutely dreadful.

I ordered a Blat sandwich with a side of hash brown and pickles. The hash brown is so mealy, stale and soggy i think it might actually be made of cardboard. It's certainly not fit for consumption. I couldn't eat it.

The pickles were packaged in a takeaway espresso cup inside the sandwich container and leaked pickle juice all over the sandwich making it soggy and disgusting, not that it would have been great in any case, since the bacon is barely cooked, and It's apparent that the sandwich was assembled while the bacon was still scalding hot, which wilted the lettuce into a gooey unappetising mayonnaisey, soggy mess that soaked into the bread.

I threw the whole meal in the bin.

I expect a Cafe selling sandwiches to know the basics of how to make a sandwich, how to package things so they don't leak on each other, and not to serve stale food.

The coffee and juice were fine.

I won't be ordering...

I adore this cafe! As a local, I can't even count the number of times I've been here over the years. It was there during my HSC where I would get a jumbo soy cap nearly every day, to my first year of uni where I turned to iced lattes, and now in my second year, where I dip inbetween smoothies and back to their expertly made coffee. I remember in the dead of winter where I would shyly ask if they did acai bowls, and the wonderful staff would immediately whip out the summer menu for me. The Counter's staff are always so welcoming and kind, asking about my studies and brightening my day. I couldnt reccomend this cafe high enough! Please treat yourself to an acai bowl, ANY of their amazing smoothies (and the vegan Bounty hazelnut frappe!!) and all of their incredible vegan food options (the vegie hero and dukkah salad will always...
