A friendly neighbourhood cafe located in the southern Sydney suburb of Oatley, The Hungry Spoon is dishing up tantalising dishes with a Middle Eastern influence. On the menu you’ll find the likes of zaatar eggs and fetta scrambled eggs alongside a haloumi burger, mezze plate and knafeh french toast.
The Sunday morning we visited, the cafe was teeming with friends catching up over breakfast, couples, and families, and the odd fur baby delighting the pint-sized patrons. The atmosphere was convivial, with a distinctly locals vibe.
The Hungry Spoon take great pride in their Artis wood roasted coffee blend, providing a full bodied aroma in every cup. For a splash of colour however, you can’t go past the red velvet latte.
Their take on smashed avocado is inspired. Served as a bruschetta, a timbale of avocado, quinoa and cherry tomato is accompanied by toasted sourdough and coils of crispy lebanese bread. The toast retains a pleasant crunch throughout the meal, while at the same time allowing the diner to spread as little or as much avocado to suit their taste. The current special sees this already substantial dish served with a smoked salmon rose.
Likewise, the chicken salad exceeds all expectations — succulent grilled, pomegranate coated chicken breast slices are served atop zesty mixed salad leaves with tomato, cucumber, walnuts, fetta and finely sliced apple, providing a surprisingly filling meal with loads of flavour and texture.
The Hungry Spoon puts a creative spin on cafe favourites and dials up the flavour, offering a range of...

Recently moved from Oatley West to Oatley the Hungry Spoon has become my local hangout.
The coffee, wood roasted, is excellent. The food with a slight bias toward Middle Eastern food is delicious but you can still get the ubiquitous egg and bacon roll except the bacon is made from Turkey. Plus, all the other regular dishes you’d expect.
However, my current favourite dish is Ful Medames, a stew made from warmed Fava beans served with olive oil, flat bread, olives and the rest. Usually served as a breakfast dish I believe it is available all day long and it is delicious.
Shadia and her staff are efficient, always pleasant and every visit I have been there I have not been disappointed.
The Café is situated in a quiet part of Oatley and that is one of its main attractions.
So there, I have now probably blown it and you’ll go and visit, and it will become too busy, but I wanted to thank Shadia for her hard work and support her success as the café has not been open...
Read moreI recently ordered takeaway from Hungry Spoon Café in Oatley and was genuinely impressed by the whole experience. The food was fresh, tasty, and made with attention to detail — exactly what I was hoping for in a casual brunch-style order. I went with the egg burger, pancakes, and bruschetta. The egg burger was simple but delicious, with soft bread and well-cooked fillings. The pancakes were light and fluffy, not overly sweet, and came with just the right amount of toppings and granish fruit. The bruschetta was fresh and vibrant, with good-quality rocket and fetta
What really stood out to me beyond the food was the ease of the experience. The café is located just outside the main hustle of Oatley’s commercial strip, so it was easy to access without dealing with traffic or crowds. Parking was straightforward, which made pick-up fast and hassle-free.
Even though I was just picking up takeaway, the staff were friendly, and my order was ready on time. The internal seating area looked clean and inviting, with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere that I’d be happy to sit down in next time. All in all, a solid spot I’d...
