Local bakeries can be a lottery: you never quite know what you’re going to get. In Tathra, the local guy, Tathra Bakery & Cafe, is a pie shop, a sandwich shop (they make three types of sandwich, and they all involve salad), and a bakery. They turn out a range of different breads plus a collection of classic Australian treats running from custard tarts to apple pies to vanilla slices and glistening chocolate eclairs, with nothing much over the five buck mark. The cheese and bacon pie ($5.50) with a smear of tangy tomato sauce ($0.40) is a good, honest pie with hunks of steak in its thick gravy. It comes without a pie tin, but is blessed with pastry firm enough to contain the piping hot contents. I was pretty delighted with it until I tasted the even better potato pie ($5.60). The crusty golden dome hides the smoothest white-pepper spiked potato mash you can imagine, making for a truly wonderful pie. While the sourdough here didn’t quite win me, the other must-eat is the kalamata olive baguette ($6). I suspect the hidden hand of another South Coast local business, Contadino olives, in these big juicy kalamata olives, kept nice and moist in the baguette’s soft white interior. We enjoyed ours with cheese from Central Tilba that was flavoured with Mystery Bay kelp, keeping it all in the NSW South Coast family.

Proper old school Mum and Dad bakery. Dropped in and grabbed a pie and a pastry today. It was good. Service was a bit slow but they were trying to train someone and it’s a family business so cut them some slack. Would definitely visit again.

Wonderful doughnuts! But there are all sorts of goodies on offer, the staff were very friendly, there were plenty of locals enjoying the outdoor seating and such a beautiful location.

We ordered a 2 pies and a 2 salad rolls from this bakery and all items were bagged by the person behind the counter. The shop was busy and the kids sat at the table less than 2 meters from where I was standing. The last behind the counter got all up I'm arms about the food being removed from the counter and made out as though we were taking the food without paying and would not put the foor through the till unless the food was placed on the counter. We did put it straight back which took no more that 30 seconds for the kids to realise that the lady was being really rude. And after putting it back she was snappy and said here 30 dollars. Yep no worries. And didn't say thank you or goodbye. Just looked at me angrily. The whole shop watched this exchange and it was really uncomfortable being there because she was so rude and demanding. I'm not sure if there was something happening or going on in the shop prior to us getting in there but it was really really rude to take it out on us...

What a rude lady the one with blonde hair. Speaking to me as she walked to the back of the shop and then came back. Bought a over priced pie for $6.90. Went to pay by tapping. My average pie was over priced at $6.90 and was told it's a $7.00 minimal on cards . I said don't worry about it as those days are gone. I'm not paying extra to make your stupit $7.00 rule. I have No problem for them too take the small % out but to clash with someone over this $7.00 minimal is not the way you run a business. She said we all do it which is total rubbish. My 5 day stay in town my family kept clear of the place so we went to the other shops. Not one shop had this $7.00 minimal. People come in to support small business by buying one thing not to get charged extra for no reason. She said I will let you off this time . Get over the rip off ways to get more money out of people and we went through this rubbish over 10 cents . NO ONE does it these days . The pie was crap and definitely ...
