Horsham is not close to major capitals but this means it does have a variety of accommodation options. The Horsham International has baa 3400 as its restaurant. It certainly has ambition but somehow doesn't quite carry it off.
The ambience is fine. The entire place is reasonably new. For some strange reason, however, the main dining room was lacking carpet or whatever flooring is intended. Incomplete or just not finished, it was hard to tell but it was raw concrete with painted marks for services in the slab. I guess that will be addressed sooner or later.
The food was quite good, though distinctly over priced (small plates around $24 and mains around $46. It has a share plate model that as the waiting staff explained means that if you order your own a la carte choices, you may have to wait - the courses likely won't come together. Our party of nine opted to share some smaller plates and mains individually and arrival was a bit haphazard.
The produce was clearly of good quality and the chefs know their stuff. If you're looking for country classics and standard menu items like a steak, that's not what they aim for. 'Wet' lamb roast (think pot roast) was against Veal Saltimbocca, for example.
The wines by the glass (again the latter a bit overpriced) were a mix of local regional and from further afield.
As with many places like this in rural centres, the front of house staff - try as they might - just don't have the background or training to match the knowledge and standard of service to the ambition or cost of the dining experience. Not fully understanding the meals, losing track of who had ordered what and serving wines (chilled whites as well) by cupping the wine glass bowls in their hands. Just the little things. A beer came in the can.
As mentioned, the food was pretty good, but in the end it's not quite there in all areas as the complete dining experience. For a reasonably sized country town, definitely and option if you're seeking something a...

Read moreGood service, food was average: lacked flavor & the atmosphere is more hotel than bistro.
I’m trying be balanced in my feedback as I opted for simple menu items: poached barmundi with chickpeas & pork broth, with a side of greens. The fish was tender but lacked any sort of seasoning, as did the chickpeas. It’s a light dish so shouldn’t be overpowered however some herbs, or a little kick, would have complimented the delicate fish well. Chickpeas were very crunchy, given there wasn’t anything else going on with them to balance the texture. Fresh greens were...fresh greens, with some soy sauce that didnt do much to benefit them. Hard to go wrong (for 9 bucks)
The service was attentive, waiter knew his wines & i felt a little bad asking if the chickpeas were undercooked. I get what they’re trying to do with the menu and in their defense; i’m sure the lamb and pork would have been tasty.
For the price ($50), though, I expect & have had better. I think the dish needs to be adjusted. I’ve never added so much seasoning and I never season a well cooked...
