Railway Hotel Castlemaine — Restaurant in Victoria

The Railway Hotel is my go to Hotel for a quality and diverse menu and I live about 50km away with lots of hotels between my residence and there. So what gets me going back....diverse menu that regularly changes, great food, reasonable prices, cold beer and great country style ambience. If your looking to eat out at Castkemaine this should be top of your list. Wine list all comes from local wineries and ever changing beers on tap. The Geelong Brewhouse oatmeal stout is to die for if your lucky enough to be there when on tap. Do yourself a favour and grab a meal here. The laminated menu is constant but the blacboard menu contains the good stuff. Always a bit of asian fusion on the blackboard. Heres a hint. Dont get there too late like we did and order near close of kitchen as your likely to miss out on popular dish like we did. However accepted it in good grace and selected something else. I feel quite aggrieved at the way I was treated by the staff and service tonight at the Railway Hotel. I ordered fish and chips & salad. The tail end of the fish was completely inedible could not cut through with a knife. Spoke to the staff about the food being inedible. They carried on about the fact that I had eaten most of the meal so therefore had to pay full price. Their attitude I believe was reprehensible and this will not change until they treat their customers with some respect for genuine poor service and serving unexcetable food to any customer. I would have been more than hapoy with a simple apology but was made to feel I was a whinger. Please when you order your food make sure you get what you are paying for. Being local we had previously been regulars here. Initially we really liked the food and the place. After a few average meals then a truely bad one here just over a year ago (cold food, very slow service) we've given it a wide berth until tonight,thinking it might be worth another shot. It was busier than I'd have expected for a Monday, but the publican bragged that they're the only thing open in town and this was quiet, so no excuses from a staffing point of view. Shame then, as usual they couldn't keep up. 25 minutes to have our order taken, 50 minutes longer to get it to us. We were not a big group, just a family with kids, yet despite ordering early we were the one of the last served. As per last time, 2 meals arrived cold.

I'd have given my opinion direct to the staff had they asked as I'm not a fan of going straight to reviews, but none bothered to check if we or the meals were ok, another sign perhaps that this is normal for this place.
