Date night at the Star Hotel in Sale. Menu looked appetizing so ordered a Salmon with a Soy Ginger Glaze for my partner and i decided I wanted the Pork Ribs, but was politely told they were out of them, which was disappointing as it was a regular menu item and not on their "specials" list. So after umming and aghhing I decided to have the Red Thai Curry with Chicken as my choice of protein. Also ordered 4 pieces of Bruschetta to share for entree and a couple of soft drinks So the meal started really well, the Bruschetta entree was delicious, had a base of pesto spread on the nicely toasted bread, topped with tomato and feta and a drizzling of balsamic vinegar on top. The pesto gave it a great flavour and the balsamic vinegar was not overpowering, so 10/10. The mains came shortly after, and I had a little taste of the partners salmon which was cooked nicely and the glaze complimented the salmon well and served with some nice steamed rice , so 8/10. Now I am a big fan of South East Asian food so was looking forward to tasting the curry. I will admit that the curry had some nice flavours to it but was lacking something, perhaps it needed more kick, as my forehead was as dry as the Simpson Desert and that is not usually the case when consuming a curry, so 7/10 . Went on a Saturday night, so was quite busy and is a family friendly outlet as it has a playground area for the kids, so lots of family groups, so was a bit noisy at times, so if you don't like alot of noise then a Saturday night may not be for you. Thought the Bruschetta represented reasonable value at $16 but thought the mains and soft drinks were a bit on the pricey side for what they were ,Salmon (37.50) and Thai Red Curry ( 32.50) and the portion size was average. Also got slugged the seemingly regular credit card surcharge on my EFTPOS transaction which further added to my concerns over value. So overall a satisfactory meal without blowing my socks off or my thermometer for that matter. Shout out to the staff who were...
Read moreI had dinner at Star Restaurant in Sale, Victoria last night, and honestly, it was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the cozy yet modern atmosphere—stylish décor with a really welcoming vibe that made it feel both special and comfortable.
The service was fantastic: super friendly, attentive without being intrusive, and genuinely passionate about the food. They made great recommendations, and I’m so glad I listened.
For starters, I had the garlic prawns, which were perfectly cooked—juicy and tender, with a rich, buttery sauce that had just the right amount of garlic kick. For the main course, I couldn’t resist the eye fillet steak, cooked medium-rare, and it was absolute perfection. Melt-in-your-mouth tender, beautifully seasoned, and served with creamy mash and fresh seasonal vegetables. Every bite was incredible.
To finish, I ordered the sticky date pudding (which I’d heard great things about), and wow—it did not disappoint. Warm, soft, and drenched in a decadent butterscotch sauce, with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on the side. Honestly, I’d come back just for that dessert alone!
Drinks-wise, I tried one of their signature cocktails—the Star Martini—which was well-balanced and refreshing, and their wine list had some excellent local selections that paired beautifully with the meal.
All in all, this place is a real standout. Amazing food, great service, and a lovely atmosphere. Whether you’re local or visiting the area, Star Restaurant is an absolute must-try. I’m already looking forward to...
Read moreBooking a table for 30 people at the Star Hotel in Sale felt like a logistical nightmare—dietary restrictions, last-minute no-shows, and one vegan who “forgot to mention” their preferences until arrival. But the staff? Absolute legends. They rearranged seating on the fly, handled substitutions without batting an eye, and even kept the chaos to a dull roar.
Now, the star of the show: the yellow curry with tofu. As a vegetarian, I’m used to being handed bland, token veggie options, but this dish was a revelation. The curry itself was a symphony of flavors—creamy coconut, zesty lemongrass, and a gentle heat that built with every bite. The tofu? Crispy on the outside, silky inside, and soaked up the sauce like a flavor sponge. It’s rare to find a pub that treats plant-based dishes with this much care, and I’d argue it’s better than most tofu curries I’ve had at dedicated Asian restaurants.
The rest of the group raved about their meals too—classic pub staples like steak and bangers were devoured, and even the gluten-free diners got proper plates (no sad salads here). Portions were huge, service was lightning-fast despite our crowd, and the vibe stayed lively without tipping into chaos.
Special shoutout to the team for accommodating our herd of 30 with humor and efficiency. They even split bills without the usual apocalyptic sighing.
If you’re coordinating a big group (or just want a curry that’ll make tofu skeptics rethink their lives), the Star Hotel...
