Uptown Cafe & Bar — Restaurant in Victoria

Ok, this has been a long time coming. We always walk past, see it bustling and say ‘we should really go there’.. well, toast was the day - and it didn’t disappoint!

We were both actually really pleasantly surprised! First - the matcha 🍵 let’s unpack this. I didn’t even get a photo of it because I drank it too quickly 🫣🥲 ( google review blasphemy! ) it’s actually really lovely compared to a lot out there right now. Not too sweet and not too bitter or grassy, really well balanced.

And the food - so flavourful! Bri got the chili eggs on roti and lovedddd it!! Said the flavours were spot on and he’d 10/10 order again.

I had the nourish bowl with tofu and a side of mushies, and can confirm, absolutely slaps. Don’t think we took a breath after our food came out 😂

I don’t usually like leaving negative reviews, but I’ve given Uptown Cafe a couple of tries and unfortunately, it just hasn’t been for me. A few months ago, I ordered the pancakes with dulce de leche, and while I do have a sweet tooth, it was a bit too much. There was a lot of dulce de leche, ice cream, and another topping that made it overwhelmingly sweet. Neither my wife nor I could finish it.

Today, I went back to give it another chance and ordered a decaf almond milk coffee, but it didn’t quite hit the mark. It was very bitter, and the milk wasn’t textured properly, which made it hard to enjoy. I also had a gluten-free brownie. It wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t for me. I can imagine someone else might enjoy it, but it wasn’t quite my taste.

It’s rare that I award 5 stars for all three categories - food, service, AND atmosphere - but after eating this meal (pictured below), I couldn’t help myself. I’ve been coming to Uptown for the past year since they opened; I’ve not only loved the mini and absolutely delicious homemade brownie bites they provide with their perfectly poured coffees, but have always felt welcomed by the friendly staff. Combined with their full breakfast menu that pairs traditional cafe cuisine with a few unique chef-inspired additions, I’d highly recommend adding this cafe to your visit list if you’re in Geelong or just the Newtown / Packington St area.
