Cornucopia Hotel — Restaurant in Wallaroo

This was an unexpected find as there were limited choices for a place to eat on the night we stopped over in Wallaroo so we didn't have high expectations. This quaint historical hotel had it all - great staff behind the bar. The young lady was very welcoming and efficient with her service of drinks and taking the meal order. The dining room was clean, spacious and warm. The meals were delivered in a very timely manner and my friend had a serving of the largest crumbed prawns I have seen AND she said they were delicious. There were size options with some of the meals and I had a half-serve of chicken schnitzel which was just the perfect sizing. On offer were a bain-marie of hot vegetable (about 6 to choose from) and about 6 different salads to choose from as well as hot bread rolls. The choices were amazing for such a small establishment. The chef was very friendly and offered my friend a take-away container for the prawns she was not able to eat. We enjoyed a local South Australian white wine which was very reasonably priced and then enjoyed spending some time in the small gaming area. I’ll start with the positive - staff were friendly and obliging.

My meal was perfectly okay, decent value and pretty standard pub grub. I gave the sad looking salad and vegetable Bain Marie’s a big miss though. But, my snitty with its topper was fine and I like the fact they offer smaller serving sizes.

Now the bad: rooms are dusty, basic and could really use some love. There’s no mattress protector on the bed, just a thin sheet. I’ve been bitten by something during the night and I’m actually really hoping they are mozzy bites because anything else I don’t want to think about.

It’s noisy. Was woken at midnight by guests yelling to each other in the hallways, slamming doors and thundering up and down the corridor. This went on for well over an hour.

The women’s bathroom was a long way from my room. When I had a shower this morning there was nowhere to put my clothes other than the floor and no shower curtain. Everything got wet.

It’s cheap, probably okay for one night. A few thoughtful little touches could make it much...
