Food: 2/5 - I cannot for the life of me understand why people have rated this place so highly and the best Japanese food they've ever had at that, and can only attribute it to them never having had Japanese food before. Either that or there's been a drastic change in management. The sushi are tiny, expensive and inedible. The rice was gummy, mushy and translucent - what happens when sushi is left sitting around for a while.
You would expect a tofu bento box to come with vegetarian side dishes given there is nothing else vegetarian on the menu. It came with two (tiny) pieces of sushi: a tuna one and a california roll - neither of which were vegetarian despite there being vegetarian sushi available for takeaway (pescetarian does not equal vegetarian). The Cali roll was so awful it was inedible due to the state of the rice so the tuna one was left alone. It also came with 3 fried squid rings (also not veg) with pale soft breading that tasted like it came straight from the freezer section of the supermarket. An OKish green salad with iceberg lettuce and a very small serving of seaweed salad made up the rest of the sides. The teriyaki tofu itself was not awful but nothing to write home about. The miso soup was the best part of the bento box - it was actually pretty tasty.
The chicken karaage donburi fared slightly better. Decent portion size but not enough to be good value. Taste-wise I would rate it a solid 3/5. It was edible, but not good. My stomach was full but my mouth was unhappy.
Price: 2/5 - sushi sizes are tiny and for the price quite unreasonable. Perhaps on par with what you might find in a chain sushi place at a shopping centre food court but incomparable to other well-rated independently owned low-end sushi places in the metro area. For the prices they are charging I would expect the sushi to be at least 50% larger or add a few more pieces to each box. Though given what we received was inedible, more would not have been welcome. The donburi was a decent portion but about what you would expect for the price.
Ambience: 3/5 - typical suburban takeaway vibe with a bit of a grubby feel. Totally forgivable if the food/value was there. There's a couple of flimsy tables outside where you can sit next to a suburban carpark.
Service: 4/5 - fine, nothing to complain nor rave about.
Overall: 2/5. This is the the kind of place I would recommend to someone I disliked. Given the poor quality of the food, high cost and lack of ambience the overall value scores about low as it gets without having gotten food poisoning. The high ratings and reviews from others probably has made me rate this place a bit harsher because it was such an utter disappointment and I feel compelled to save others from the same experience. Yes it is a low-end suburban Japanese joint, but it is no excuse because there a plenty of other options in this category in the outer suburbs of Perth that score a lot better...
Read moreA massive thank you to Hiro and the team at Doubleview Sushi. I ordered a 40 piece sushi platter for my 9 year olds birthday party. The sushi was probably the freshest we have had, the whole lot was munched up by 6 little kids who loved it. So fresh and delicious. I was also impressed by the professionalism of Hiro and his team, they were accommodating with fillings offered (I was a little picky) and also impressed that Hiro opened early to accommodate our order pick up schedule. I would recommend for both the quality, flavor and service! Thank you...
