This place is a (not so) secret gem, and has been for years (decades!)
I advise coming with a regular, because just like a S. E. Asian hawker centre you really want to know what each store does well. For example the char teow kway from Malaysian Hawker is amazing (and that is definitely not there only standout dish, just one example, and one of my faves)
Regulars and locals will be able to tell you which stores have been around for ages, they are normally safe choices in their āgenreā. There seems to be some stalls that low success rates, but some stores in these locations have been fantastic, just unable to make the business work, most recently I remember Jai Curry Hurry, which had amazing dry curries, breads and other South Indian dishes.
Some newer (all now well established) stores with great food include the dumpling store, the dim sum store and Paris Cafe. The dumpling store is great, I personally love it for some starters for the table, it is great being able to get some siew mai, Shanghai dumplings, or friend squid etc from dim sum. Paris cafe has had one of the biggest impacts (and improvements) to this food court in many years with itās delicious, and great value, euro fair.
Even the simplicity of how only one stall sells drinks (and it only sells drinks and desserts) works great.
To close, you can get great food here, but it is a food court, so also keep that in perspective. Also, if you have young kids Friday night can be great as they is entertainment and a playground etc. but if you donāt have kids I need to warn you about Friday nights, as they can be...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI haven't been here for at least a decade so it was well beyond time to give it another whirl. Well, what can I say? It really hasn't changed that much! Sure there are some different eateries in there now but it's still got some of the old places that have been there seemingly forever.
I don't know if it can really be called an international food court (realistically) as you only have a choice of Asian, Asian or Asian..... Long gone are the European options. Fortunately for me I love Asian cuisine, it's just a shame to not have other cuisines present to suit everyone.
The other thing is the lack of friendliness of some of the people serving you, there's certainly a lack of western style graciousness and pleasantry. Again, being accustomed to this it's not a problem for me, however others might find it off-putting. Having said that, it was extremely busy (Saturday evening) and noisy with people enjoying themselves. I saw that they still allow byo drinks (alcohol only) for those who fancy a little tipple with their meal.
Overall I think I'll...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe best stall in here is DE HONEY CHARCOAL GRILLED. Almost all that they offer is delicious and to a great standard.
Am not surprised to see, that MEAT UP stall had closed down. Their food towards the end was honestly dismal. Hopefully that Uncle who has some shop at Broadway in Nedlands can still cook acceptable food there, although I won't be even bothering to try it.
The Japanese Stall had californium rolls where the rice was frozen inside. So maybe they could not sell and had refrigerated it to bring out for resale again? Had 2 packets, one mixed one and one Salmon with Avo. Both packets had frozen rice in them sadly. Their cooked food seems alright though.
The Singapore Stall has had portions and ingredients reduced big time compared to the last owner of that stall. Very sad.
Malaysian Stall was never the same after the long standing owners decided to retire.
Have not tried the rest so may do the Vietnamese and the China Dumpling...
