Another place we wanted to try as we had heard that the food offered, Hong Kong, Malaysian, and Singapore dishes, was very good. Although initially drawn to the fried fish wings with mee hoon soup, I decided on the Malaysia style fried Hokkien mee. It has been more than 30 years since I last tasted this dish. It's different from the Singapore version. The sauce is dark and thicker and not made with prawn shell stock. I enjoyed it. My wife likes to try nasi lemak in different restaurants and pronounced this one to be good. It came with a bowl of delicious chicken curry, half a hard boiled egg, fried peanuts and anchovies, a slices of cucumber. And a very tasty sambal that hit all the right notes. The coconut rice was pleasantly fragrant and well cooked. Disabled access is available, credit cards are accepted, service is efficient and friendly, and there was plenty of free parking nearby when we were there at about noon on a Thursday. The cafe also sells cakes, bao, and we saw some zhong (glutinous rice dumplings) too. It has cooked frozen items...
Read moreOne of my favourite beef brisket noodles featuring their Cantonese beef brisket and tendon noodles by Winthrop Hawker's Cafe. Lovely soft beef brisket and tendon that just melts in your mouth. Very few places can do it right.
Also another good dish: Chicken hor fun egg sauce by Winthrop Hawker’a cafe
This place cannot be missed when hor fun egg sauce is mentioned. Unfortunately i should have ordered the combination which includes seafood, however their hor fun doesn't disappoint.
Loaded which chicken (i believe is thigh) the chicken isn't dry but could do with smaller bite pieces in my opinion. The sauce i feel is more clear but unlike enak style and it sits between the eggy Oriental Delights style. Comes with cut chilli when requested. Loaded with veg as well, the hor fun does have wok hey and is infused into the sauce. Very similar to oriental delights but i feel oriental delights still has an edge over this dish.
This now ranks no2 for me as it stands apart from the other competitors. It is also prices at...
Read moreI was interested in trying this place once I found out they sell cendol. The menu has more of a Hong Kong flair than a Malaysian one, particularly with the pineapple buns out in the cabinet by the entrance. They even have one filled with BBQ pork, which I also tried and liked. They have a breakfast menu which has a macaroni soup but it's only available on Saturday. I ordered from the counter and came back after doing some groceries. I ended up grabbing a wonton noodle soup as well as a Hokkien mee and a char kweh tiew. The Malaysian food was alright. It did have pork rind in it which was a pleasant surprise. I really liked their wonton noodle soup. Both the wontons and the soup had a nice fragrance and flavour. The cendol was great and refreshing, which a sweet coconut flavour, and had red bean mixed in with it. It was a nice place for food even though it's not...
