Went down to Wollongong to get married in a small civil wedding out on the beach. We had a small group of 10, and a few weeks beforehand we were already looking for somewhere that was relatively close to where everyone was staying and where they served delicious food at reasonable prices. Northbeach checked all the right boxes, plus it was highly reviewed and highly ranked amongst local restaurants. Suffice it to say, the food is amazing - our guests loved it, we loved it and we all left satisfied. But, the reason why Im posting this is because of how they made such a great night even greater through top of the line customer service. I called a few days before the dinner to confirm, and spoke with Lorraine who over a series of emails and phonecalls really listened to us and restructured their party menu to fit what we wanted. She assisted us with the costing and made some personal touches with the menus itself to make it that more special. When we got there, everyone from the front of house to the floor staff where all-smiles and super helpful & attentive. Lorraine was there aswell to greet and sit us, and as she was on service stayed throughout the night checking in on us at the most opportune moments (like when we had mains come round and when the cake came out). When we left, she was the last to say goodbye and thanked us for choosing them to celebrate our small & intimate wedding. Lorraine and the rest of the Northbeach Pavilion team have left such an impression, that my wife & I fully intend on coming back to Wollongong just to eat there again
Tl;Dr - Food is amazing, Customer Service even moreso
Order the Penne Isalberto (rich and super fancy truffle cream and butter sauce), Spaghetti Alla Scoglio (my mate couldn't believe how much seafood was in this that he ended up hoarding a bowl of mussells to himself) and La Tinterella (this is our favourite ❤) Overlooks the beach, and at night its pretty damn magical...
Read moreSuch a shame a restaurant in such a magic location was so bad. From the minute we arrived, the first thing we noticed was the unbearable heat. It was so disgustingly hot and there were no fans or air conditioning.
There was confusion as to where our table was when we arrived even though there were hardly any people and we were a large group.
We finally get seated and were given a menu. Let me tell you, you’ll find better options at a bistro or pub. We couldn’t believe they were charging $26 for a margarita. This is the same place that that gives you the cutlery in a bucket and you have to get up to get your own glass of water! Even the fine dining restaurants in Sydney don’t charge that much.
My friend ordered a fresh squeezed juice and instead of serving it to her in a nice glass, it was given to her in a plastic container with a straw even though we were dining in.
We decided to share the antipasto platter. So disappointing. The bread was like 4 slices of tip top white bread that had been flattened and over toasted. The meats were like the ones you’d get from a Woolies deli. Beyond disappointing.
It was at that point we decided we were not going to stay so we asked for the bill and were told we had to get up and pay at the counter. This restaurant completely lacks service, yet they overcharge for everything and we were lucky to get a smile from a staff member.
It is so sad to see the decline of this once amazing restaurant. The location is so beautiful and there is so much potential for what it could be. Safe to say, we...
Read moreA well presented restaurant in a great location right on the beach. The staff seemed nice and friendly but unfortunately we felt really let down after dining here. It's the first time I've ever had food envy of my 6 year old son who ordered a kids pizza. This was quite nice and reasonably priced ($16).
I ordered the chilli prawn pasta dish. I have to agree with other reviews.. A tiny portion.. A very small amount of pasta and a total of 5 small prawns. The pomodoro sauce was ok but it just didn't look like an appealing dish. There was too much sauce but I'll attribute that to a lack of pasta and prawns. This dish has ambitions to match the quality and sophistication normally associated with a $34 dish but misses the mark massively.
My wife ordered a bruschetta pizza. Way too much garlic paste to the point it was inedible. After 1.5 slices neither of us could stomach any more And we left almost the whole thing on the plate.
With plenty of staff walking around I would have happily passed on feedback but no one stopped to ask how it was or why we may have left almost a full pizza. I suspect they would have known. Strangely enough even though there was a lot of staff.. You had to order at the counter. This seemed a bit cheeky for a restaurant that definately does not have the price tag of an RSL bistro.
Wollongong is a city with fantastic restaurants and amazing food. This just didn't cut it and we will definately be trying somewhere...
